A BIBLICAL REVIEW OF “BLUE GENES”

By G. H. Anderson

PART I - INTRODUCTION

In the years 2007 - 2008 I became acutely and sadly aware of the evil and pernicious influence psychiatry and psychology has had on the Lord’s churches in general and on some individual Christians in particular.

I have been leery of psychiatry and psychology ever since I was saved in October of 1958 and even more so after I became a genuine Bible-believer in 1968. Even a cursory review of the writings of famous (or popular) psychiatrists and psychologists (secular or “Christian”) reveals that most, if not all, of the speculations, hypothesis, and assertions of Humanistic psychiatry and psychology are contrary to clear Biblical teaching, precepts, principals, and doctrine. However, I have never taken the time to examine the suppositions, theories, assumptions, beliefs, and claims of psychiatry/psychology until recently.

Certain recent events and circumstances concerning two (2) very close Christian friends of mine and problems they have encountered with some of their children, and my own experience with one of my grandchildren (all around 15-18 years of age) has forced me to examine the Philosophy of Humanistic psychiatry and psychology more closely in an attempt to understand why and how these problems have arisen and what we (Bible-believing Christians) are to believe and do about them.

The book “Blue Genes” was written by Paul Meier (a well known Christian Psychiatrist) and three of his colleagues (identified below). I have enclosed the short bios (that were included at the end of the book “Blue Genes”) for the reader’s edification.

A brief explanation as to the origins of psychiatry/psychology is necessary in order to understand why it has come to be so widely accepted by the majority of people in the United States today.

Humanism (see Humanist Manifesto’s I, II, and III) is the philosophical and religious foundation of psychiatry/psychology. As Judeo-Christian precepts and principles have been rejected by nearly all of the educational institutions (schools, colleges, universities and seminaries) in the United States over the past 100+ years, Humanism (in all of its many forms) has aggressively filled the void. The result has been a radical shift in the basic beliefs once held by many Americans (especially college-educated people) from a Judeo-Christian or a Biblical framework and outlook on life to a Humanist “belief system” based on education and science (“falsely so-called”).

Today, Humanism has permeated every facet of our society and culture. Every institution in our nation has been profoundly affected by Humanism; and its “theories”,  ”suppositions”, and “beliefs” are now commonly accepted as being true by a majority of Americans, especially the “educated elite”. Whether one looks at the congress, the courts, the presidency, the armed forces, (and all other government institutions), the media, the schools, the colleges, the universities, and tragically, even the churches - Humanism has become the accepted (or “official”) cultural philosophy or religion of America (and most of the rest of the Western World); and psychiatrists and psychologists, along with teachers and college professors, are the major purveyors and proponents of this new “belief system”.

All of the early psychiatrists involved in the creation and establishment of Psychiatry/Psychology were either Secular Humanists or Religious Humanists, and for the past 100+ years the vast majority of the psychiatrists/psychologists who have come after them have embraced Humanism.

{See books and articles by Christian authors Martin and Diedre Bobgan (“PSYCHOHERESY: The Psychological Seduction of Christianity”; orThe End of Christian Psychology"; etc.) at http://www.psychoheresy-aware.org/. Or read the book Psychology and the Churchand the numerous articles on Psychiatry & Psychology and its destructive effects on Christians and the church by Dave Hunt and T. A. Or check out the excellent books by knowledgeable secular authors: “MANUFACTURING VICTIMS: What the Psychology Industry is Doing to People” Third Edition; by Dr. Tana Dineen; or HOUSE OF CARDS: Psychology and Psychotherapy Built on Myth” by Dr. Robyn Dawes.}

Since the foregoing statements are historically accurate and factually true, I find it extremely difficult to understand how Christians (true Bible-believers) can accept anything that psychiatrists/psychologists have to say or recommend, since the entire foundation of their theories is based on Humanistic precepts and principals, all of which are contrary to the Bible and in direct conflict with every major doctrine and belief that Bible-believing Christians hold dear. {See Addendum (on page 85) on Humanism vs. 25 Basic Bible Doctrines}

However, since we live in an age where Science and Technology (in all fields of endeavor - including psychiatry/psychology) are regarded with superstitious religious awe and accepted as practically infallible; the “theories”, “suppositions” and “beliefs” of the so-called “experts”, “scientists”, and “professionals” (psychiatrists and psychologists {“doctors”!} included) have now become “gospel” and are generally accepted as truth, regardless of any facts or evidence that may be presented to the contrary. This is true in the fields of Physics, Biology, Geology, Astronomy, Anthropology, etc. It is also true in the fields of Philosophy and Theology (where psychiatry and psychology rightly belong).

Humanism is now the “official” (but undeclared) religion of America (and nearly all of the Western World), and psychiatrists/psychologists have become the “priests” and “priestesses” of this new religion. The Bible (K.J.B.) provides believers with many warnings in regards to philosophy, etc. [Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. Colossians 2:8]; It warns us against even a little leaven” i.e. False Doctrine, Philosophy, Traditions of men, etc. [A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. Galatians 5:9]. It also warns us against science falsely so-called” [O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 1Timothy 6:20]. We also are to be on guard against being “beguiled” by “enticing words”. [And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. Colossians 2:4]

Christians must be especially wary of psychiatry and psychology and of the “Christians” that earn their living in the fields of psychiatry or psychology. Although some of these Christians may be sincere in their beliefs, in reality they are introducing false doctrine and leaven into the church and leading Christians to embrace a world view and belief system that can only lead to a turning away from God and His holy word in the end.

“God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.” [Romans 3:4]

“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” [Psalms 11:3]

*books - (not mentioned in the bio – many of the books co-authored with Dr. Frank Minirth!) “Dr.” Meier co-authored many of his books with Dr. Frank Minirth (ex partner?) and yet he fails to mention that fact in his short bio. Not very “forthright” or honest – wouldn’t you say?

A BIBLICAL REVIEW OF THE BOOK “BLUE GENES” – Part I

{A Scriptural Examination of Modern Psychiatric & Psychological Theories in the Light of the Holy Scriptures}

Part I of this review of the book “Blue Genes” will examine Paul Meier’s personal conclusions and psychiatricdiagnosis” and “treatment of the hypothetical “mental problems” experienced by some of the psychiatric patients (i.e. “clients”) he has treated. I will compare Mr. Meier’s personalconclusions” with the “Scripture of truth” to ascertain whether “Christian” psychiatry (and psychology) is compatible with the Holy words of God as found in the Bible, or whether it is Humanistic philosophy cleverly disguised as “Christian” mental health solutions.

The format for this review is quite simple. I will take exact quotes from the book “Blue Genes” and comment on them – using the Holy Bible (the King James Bible) as my FINAL AUTHORITY in determining “TRUTH” or “ERROR”. {All Underlines, Bold, and Comments in {Blue} by G.A.}

Throughout the book “Blue Genes” Paul Meier continually discredits, disparages, derides, maligns, and slanders anyone (especially Bible believers) who might disagree with his personalopinions”. He cleverly dismisses practically all Scriptural precepts, tenants, and principles that might apply to people’s “problems” through the use of “name calling” and “simplistic derogatory characterizations” – as the following quotes will demonstrate.

EXAMPLES OF NAME CALLING & DEROGATORY CHARACTERIZATIONS

Page 10 - “Legalistic believers”; page 11 - Ignorant people”, “cultural prejudices”, “Christian legalists”; page 12 - legalistic church”; page 13 - acting out of ignorance”; page 14 - less masochistic circumstances”; page 16 - the arrogant, the un-empathetic”; page 26 -selfish people”; page 27 - demanding parents”, “narcissists{most of page 27 is an unwarranted attack on parents}; page 28 -narcistic people”; page 29 -evil father”; page 56 -legalistic Christians”, “Prince Charming’s mother”; Page 60 -her legalistic church”; page 61 - “a rigid thinker”, “brainwashed”, “rigid and controlling”; page 62rigid parenting”.

TWO MORE EXAMPLES

ON PAGE 11 Meier claims:

usually people who criticize others the most for taking medicines for the brain are people who have the most brain deficiencies themselves.

Meier’s reasoning here is childish, immature, and juvenile thinking – hardly worthy of a mature adult “Christian Psychologist” and “Counselor”. Meier could NOT PROVE his infantile hypothesis if his life depended on it! {“usually” is not very specific}

ON PAGE 15 Meier states:

But it also makes me very sad and angry when I hear of people committing suicide because their well-meaning friends, relatives, or pastors laid a guilt trip on them for taking psychiatric medicines or for receiving psychological counseling.

An unsupportable assumption and pure speculation on Meier’s part. There is no way that Meier could know (for certain) WHAT causes a person to commit suicide! Only God knows our hearts:

1 Kings 8:39 Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)

2 Chronicles 6:30 Then hear thou from heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and render unto every man according unto all his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou only knowest the hearts of the children of men:)

See: [Genesis 20:6; Deuteronomy 8:2, 13:3; 1 Chronicles 28:9; 2 Chronicles 1:11, 32:31; Psalms 44:21, 139:23; Luke 16:15; Acts 15:8; Romans 8:27; 1 John 3:20]

It should be clear (by the preceding remarks) that Paul Meier is intolerant of anything or anyone who thinks or believes differently than he does; and that he uses the childish and immature devices of name-calling and oversimplified derogatory categorizing of people to dismiss any “advice” other than his own! By page 15 of his book, Paul Meier has already demonstrated that he relies more on fallacious humanistic reasoning than he does on “the Scripture of truth”. I shall have much more to say about this as I continue with this review.

It is impossible to comment on all of the Scriptural error in the book “Blue Genes” without reproducing the entire book and commenting on practically everything written therein. But should you have a copy of the book (please do not waste your money buying a copy), check out Paul Meier’s privateopinion” as to “God’s purpose for giving us the Bible” on pages six through seven; and again, Meier’s “private interpretation” on Psalm 19 on pages seven through eight.

ON PAGE 26 – Meier said:

Ephesians 4:26-27 tells us it is fine to get angry, without sinning, if we get rid of the anger by bedtime.

But Ephesians 4:26-27 says nothing of the kind.

Ephesians 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27 Neither give place to the devil.

WHERE in Scripture does it say: “it is fine to get angry”? Meier is CHANGING the Holy words of God by ADDING his own words and his own private interpretation to what the Bible actually says. The Holy Bible does NOT say “it is fine to get angry”. And what happened to the warning (admonition) about “giving place to the devil”? In one fell swoop, & without the slightest hesitation, this professional Christian counselor has ADDED to; SUBTRACTED from; and CHANGED the Holy words of God to suit his own private purposes - typical of modern day “Christians”!

ON PAGE 27 – Meier said:

God declares you to be a person of high esteem in Psalm 139 and many other places.

Again – another private interpretation. God said NO SUCH THING.

Psalms 139:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.
20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.
21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

WHERE in all of Psalm 139 does it say: “God declares you to be a person of high esteem”? No where’s in the entire Psalm (or the rest of the Bible) does God even hint that He considers (or “declares”) anyone “to be a person of high esteem”. Meier is “reading into” the verses his own private interpretation, in order to push the Humanistic (i.e. psychiatric & psychological) philosophy of “self-esteem”. On the contrary, God has a very LOW OPINION of mankind!

Psalms 14:2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Psalms 53:2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.
3 Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

And what about those of us (Christians) who have been redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ?

1 Corinthians 1:26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.
30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

WHERE is there room for “self esteem” in all of the forgoing Scriptures?

ON PAGE 27 – Meier said:

When you mature spiritually, you will become more of an ‘internal thinker’ rather than an externalizer. You will be able to say to yourself, ‘God loves and accepts me. I love and accept me. My parents are only two out of six billion people on the planet. I do not need their acceptance any more than I need any one else’s acceptance.”

Meier is teaching the Humanistic philosophy of “self love” & “self esteem”; something that can not be found in Scripture, and something that is totally foreign to the Holy words of God. The Lord Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf is the only thing that makes us “acceptable” to Almighty God - NOT who or what we are as individuals. The fact that God the Father loved us and the Son of God was willing to die for our sins does not mean that God ever “accepts” us for who we are - apart from Christ.

Meier is also teaching DISRESPECT for parents – “honour thy father and thy mother” [Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16] is one of the few “Commandments” from the Old Testament that is  carried over into the New Testament and which Christians are still under an obligation to obey [Ephesians 6:2]. A person’s parents are NOT to be considered (or treated) like all the rest of the “six billion people on the planet”; they are, after all, you’re PARENTS! Contrary to Paul Meier’s “psycho-heresy” - as adults, even if we disagree with them, and even if we can not get along with them, we still have a duty and an obligation to “honor” our parents.

ON PAGE 27 – Meier said:

Psalm 68 tells us that God takes the lonely and places them in families. He will help you find better friends who will not take advantage of you . . . . . . ”

Friends” – Like PAID professional counselors?

Psalms 68:6 God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.

Is there a difference between “the lonely” and “the solitary”? Up until the advent of Humanistic psychiatry and psychology there was not that much distinction between the definition of the words “lonely” and “solitary” (See Webster’s 1828 Dictionary). However, with the acceptance of psychiatric & psychological terms and definitions, the modern definition of LONELY has come to mean a person who is gloomy, dismal, depressed, and lonesome – which “meaning” Meier chooses and then applies to his “private interpretation” of the verse.

lonely adjective, -lier, -liest.

1. affected with, characterized by, or causing a depressing feeling of being alone; lonesome.

2. destitute of sympathetic or friendly companionship, intercourse, support, etc.: a lonely exile.

3. lone; solitary; without company; companionless.

4. remote from places of human habitation; desolate; unfrequented; bleak: a lonely road.

5. done without assistance or accompaniment; done in solitude: solitary chores.

6. being the only one: a solitary exception.

As I stated earlier - practically all of page 27 is a pernicious swipe against parents in general.

ON PAGE 28 – Meier said:

God doesn’t call anything sin unless it hurts someone . . . .”

Just exactly WHERE in Scripture do we find this “precept” (or principal)? According to Holy the Bible: “All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.[1 John 5:17] – whetherit hurts someone” or NOT! For someone who was trained in “Christian” Institutions of Higher Learning, Meier demonstrates an appalling lack of knowledge and understanding of the Holy Scriptures, and a callous disregard for God’s words.

ON PAGE 28 – Meier said:

Romans 8:1 tells us that there is absolutely no condemnation for those who belong to Jesus.

Is that what the verse says? [Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.] The good “doctorconveniently left out a critical part of the verse. Par for the course – that is for modern day “Christians”!

ON PAGE 28 – Meier said:

When you hold a grudge against yourself for past sins, that grudge is a worse sin than whatever sin you committed in the first place.”

Does Meier have any Scripture to support his assertion? What if a person murders someone and through conviction “holds a grudge against” himself; is the “sin” of the “grudge” - “WORSE” than the MURDER? I trow not! Substitute Rape, Incest, Slavery, Sodomy, and a host of other grievous SINS in place of murder; does Meier’s assertion (i.e. private opinion) concerning this issue pan out?

ON PAGE 29 – Meier said:

She deserves to love herself and become her own best friend.

Can Meier supply us with Scripture to support his psychoheresy? [2Timothy 3:1-5]

ON PAGE 29 – Meier said:

“We try to get our clients to cry, because Jesus said He would bless those who mourn by finally feeling comfort (the beatitudes, Matthew Chapter 5 etc.)”.

The Lord Jesus Christ said NO SUCH THING!. [Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.] Why does someone have to “cry” in order to “mourn”? And the verse says “they shall be comforted” – NOT that they will finally be “FEELING comfort”. {“clients” = $$$}

ON PAGE 30 – Meier said:

The Meier Clinics have been around for almost 30 years now, and the Holy Spirit has led over a million people to trust Christ as a result of various Meier Clinic-related ministries. (through therapy, seminars, books, radio, TV, training, mission trips, etc.” {What ever happened to the word of God (i.e. the Scriptures)?} [Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.] About a third of our clientele are nonbelievers when they start therapy. We even had a topless dancer check into our Day Program recently because we were on her insurance providers list. She became a believer and learned how to really love and be loved”.

She “became a believer” in WHAT? She “learned how to really love and be loved” – WHAT in the world does that mean? The book Blue Genes is just one continuous ADVERTISEMENT for the “Meier Clinics”! The previous quote is just a small sample of the “propaganda” put out by the author.

ON PAGE 31 – Meier said:

Up to half of the American population has an inherited predisposition for some mental abnormality (depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, OCD, etc.). {Based on what “scientific study”?} With the medications we have today, these people can lead normal lives. In ten years, the treatments available will by far exceed those of today, so the future looks bright”.

 The future looks bright” for the Meier Clinics ($$$) with “up to half of the American populationNEEDINGmental health services” (at least according to Meier) “The future looks bright” for “up to half of the American population”, since they can now look forward to being strung out on DRUGS for the rest of their lives!

ON PAGE 32, the clever methodology used by the Paul Meier to convince people that Psychiatry, Psychology, Medication, and Counseling are the way to a “Happy Life” is to equate those things with some of the discoveries and improvements in modern Medicine & Health Care; by comparing the modern treatment of high blood pressure, diabetes, or arthritis (ALL “physical” diseases) with modern psychiatric “programs”, “techniques”, and “treatments” of so-called MENTAL DISEASES. This cleverly contrived approach amounts to the cunning manipulation of FACTS & DATA to obtain a desired end; that is – ENDLESS “CLIENTS” & LOTS OF MONEY ($$$) for the Meier Clinic, and of course Dr. Meier!

ON PAGE 37 – Meier said:

Good thoughts bring peace and comfort {Scripture?}

ON PAGE 40 – Meier said:

There are 150 passages of Scripture that address dreams. Dreams have always served as an important part of God’s communion with people; for example, God spoke to Jacob, Daniel, Mother Mary, Joseph, and a host of other biblical characters in dreams”.

To be precise – the word dream (or dreams) is actually mentioned only 123 times in only 87 verses in the Holy Bible; not in “150 passages of Scripture” as Meier claimed.

Is Meier advocating that God still has “communion with people today through “dreams”, just exactly as He did with some of the Old Testament Saints; Prophets; or “mother mary” and Joseph? Does God communicate with people through “dreams” today or does He communicate with them through His written Holy word – which is it? And if a person’s (a “Christian’s”) private “dreamcontradicts the Scriptures which takes precedence – the “dream” or Scripture? If the “dream” and Scripture are in conflict - which does a person believe? What do they follow?

Meier quotes part of Psalms 16:7 out of a N.I.V.Even at night my heart instructs me” and jumps to the faulty conclusion that David was sleeping and that he was referring to his “dreams”; but the Holy Bible says no such thing.

Psalms 16:7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

WHERE are the words “sleep” or “dreams” found in the verse? Meier is in such a rush to support his own private psychiatric interpretation of “dreams” (and their supposed purpose) that he totally IGNORES the fact that David would often lie on his bed and “MEDITATE” upon the person of God and upon God’s Holy words – while fully AWAKE and NOTdreaming”!

Psalms 63:6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.

Psalms 119:55 I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept thy law.

Psalms 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Psalms 119:148 Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.

Notice how “the Scripture of truth” can clear up any and all of the psychiatric and psychological misconceptions that Meier asserts. Partial quotes; misquotes; and misapplication - Paul Meier never misses an opportunity to take verses and words of Scripture out of context and twist and wrest them - if it will support his perverse Humanistic Psychiatric Philosophy. Humanistic Psychiatric and Psychological speculation, conjecture, supposition, and hypothesis about “dreams” (and their purpose) should have no part in determining what is “True”.

From page 43 through page 51 Meier presents his (and other psychiatrists & psychologists) THEORIES about “DREAMS” – under the following headings:

·   HOW DREAMS WORK {pages 43-44}

·   NIGHTMARES {pages 44-45}

·   SEROTONAN AND SLEEP {pages 45-49}

·   GOOD NIGHT, SWEET DREAMS {pages 49-51}

After a very brief physiological description of what our BODY does when we sleep, Meier goes into his theory of the spiritual & psychological significance (and meaning) of a dream.

HOW DREAMS WORK {pages 43-44}

 How often have you experienced an insightful dream, then told yourself in the middle of the night, ‘I can’t wait to share this with my mate, or pastor, or therapist?’ Then when you awaken the next morning, you remember having an important dream but can’t recall more than bits or pieces. Part of you wants to know more about your soul, but a large part of you is scared the truth will hurt. {Which “part”: our soul; our spirit; our heart; our mind; or our conscience?}

Meier continues: Your brain frequently builds dreams around painful issues that you are unwilling to recognize or resolve. Often a person is unaware of how suppressed conscious emotions resurface in the sub-consciousness of dreams.

This subjective reasoning is based on Sigmund Freud’s THEORIESNOT BIBLICAL TRUTH. {See pages 127-129 of “The End of Christian Psychology” by Martin & Deidre Bobgan.}

Jeremiah 23:28 The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD.

NIGHTMARES {pages 44-45}

Meier continues with more subjective opinions and theories and on page 45 in regards to God’s Law Meier speaks about “. . . . . disobey God’s loving recommendations for us . . . . .” Just exactly what areGod’s loving recommendations”? {Chapter & Verse?}

SEROTONIN AND SLEEP {pages 45-49}

In regards as to how we are to communicate with Almighty God, Meier said: “. . . . and have a daily and nightly friendly chats with Him . . . . so have a little trust that He knows what He is doing . . . .. The Most High God of Heaven and Earth is NOT your “friendly neighborhood therapist” - He is Almighty God! And we are NOT to “have a little trust” in Him, we are to put ALL our TRUST in Him.

Psalms 18:2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

Psalms 25:20 O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.

Psalms 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Psalms 40:4 Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

Psalms 56:4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

Psalms 56:11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

Psalms 62:8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

Psalms 71:5 For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

Job 13:15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.

WHERE (in Scripture) are we told to: “have a little trust  that He knows what He is doing”? This is an irreverent Humanistic attitude toward the magnificent LORD of glory – TYPICAL of proud and vain glorious men, NOT genuine Bible believers.

ON PAGE 50 – Meier mentions the verses in Ephesians 4:26-27 and then ADDS to the Holy words of God.

ON PAGE 60 – Meier takes a swipe at a client’slegalistic church” (“her legalistic church told her she should just depend on the Lord and prayer.) and he then criticizes her parents and blames them for the client’sproblems” because of what he simplistically calls “the rigid way she was raised”.

ON PAGE 61 – Meier continues with his oversimplified charges and accusations – he speaks about: “a rigid thinker”; “less likely to be brainwashed as an adult by some cult leader”; and “she will also be less likely to marry someone who is rigid and controlling”.

On the one hand Meier denouncesrigid thinkers” – i.e. anyone who thinks differently than Meier; and on the other hand, he makes broad statements about what his clients might do in the future – based on the treatment they received from Meier and the Meier Clinics! HOW can any mortal man predict what someone else will do in the future? This is pure speculation and guesswork on the part of Paul Meier without one shred of scientific evidence to back it up.

ON PAGE 62 – Meier again takes a swipe at his client’s parents and blames the client’s “problems” on her mom and dad: “as a result of rigid parenting by her mom and dad.” Meier’s simplistic and oversimplified deductions are based on very shallow and superficial inquiries, and have no basis in scientific (or Scriptural) fact. Do ALL children who are raised in a “rigid way or with “rigid parenting” have the EXACT SAMEPROBLEMS” as his client? Of course not!

ON PAGE 63 – Meier states:

I urge everyone to become his or her best friend, so a little self-pity is a godly thing to practice, not a sin like Satan and his assistants would like you to believe.

WHERE do we find Meier’s Humanistic principals in the Scriptures? Since when is self concern; “self pity; and self lovea godly thing” and “NOT A SIN”? One of the main “problems” of all men (and women) is TOO MUCH “SELF LOVE” – NOT too little!

Ephesians 5:29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

ON PAGE 64 – Meier recommends:

Find an understanding friend who will empathize with you and listen to your ambivalent feelings without condemning you or laying a guilt trip on you. You may need to find someone other than a family member.”

Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

Proverbs 17:17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Proverbs 27:6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

We don’t needfriends” that are only going to “empathize” with us or agree with us. We need “friends” who will tell us the TRUTH – even if it HURTS!

Galatians 4:16 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

What do “ambivalent feelings” have to do with living a Christ-directed life? Meier’s “advice” is just some more Humanistic reasoning and philosophy coming from a “Professional ‘Christian’ Counselor”!

ON PAGE 64 – Meier continues:

Remember, it was Jesus who told us to weep with those who weep, and that there is no condemnation to those who belong to Him (Romans 8:1)”

Is that what the Holy Scriptures really say?

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

The good “doctor” neglected to tell the WHOLE TRUTH – didn’t he? He left out (purposely omitted) those words of God that in the context clarify the words that came before. In Meier’s brazen attempt to absolve his clients of all personal responsibility, he has SUBTRACTED from God’s word to justify his perverse Humanistic philosophy!

ON PAGE 64 – Meier says:

If it is okay to mow your lawn or paint your house, it is probably okay to work on your own outward appearance a little.”

Meier often uses carnal “similes” and “metaphors” to convince people of his THEORIES – rather than quote whole verses of Scripture. He often makes a comparison of scientifically verified physical medical practices to support psychiatrists & psychologist’s unverified and unscientificmental medical” practices.

ON PAGES 64 65 Meier said:

Some women have genetic relatives who have schizophrenia, or who are bipolar, or who have experienced recurrent depressions, or alcoholism, or obsessive compulsion disorder (counting things, rechecking things, compulsive hand washing, hoarding, etc.). You may not have any of these inherited diseases yourself . . . . .

I will only comment on one of those supposedinherited diseases” – “ALCOHOLISM”:

IS ALCHOLISM {i.e. DRUNKENESS} TRULY A DISEASE?

  1.  IF it is a disease, it is the only “disease” that is contracted by an act of will.

  2.  It is the only “disease” that is habit forming.

  3.  It is the only “disease” that requires a license to propagate it.

  4.  It is the only “disease” that is bottled and sold.

  5.  It is the only “disease” that requires outlets and stores to spread it.

  6.  It is the only “disease” that produces revenue for the government.

  7.  It is the only “disease” that is spread by advertising.

  8.  It is the only “disease” for which people are fined for contracting.

  9.  It is the only “disease” that destroys marriages and families.

10. It is the only “disease” that provokes violence and crime.

11. It is the only “disease” that brings death on the highways.

12. It is the only “diseasewithout a germ, or virus, or physical cause, and for which

       there is no preventive or corrective medicine.

Isaiah 5:11 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!

Isaiah 5:22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:

Isaiah 28:7 But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Proverbs 23:29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

ON PAGE 66 – Meier said:

“. . . . . Really nice people do things like this when their brain chemicals are extremely unbalanced. Just recently, a postpartum mother a few miles from where I live went psychotic and cut off the limbs of her baby, killing the child. She had no idea what she was doing. This is called postpartum psychotic depressive reaction. It is purely a chemical reaction. . . ”

HOW did Meier know WHAT was in that mother’s mind when she killed her baby? HOW could he possibly know WHY she killed her child? His conclusions are based on pure SPECULATION. WHAT she did was MURDERNOT JUST “a chemical reaction”! Assumptions are not FACTS! Do you think that God will excuse her barbaric act as a “purely chemical action”? I trow not!

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

ON PAGE 69 – Meier said:

In group therapy at our Day Program, some people realize it was their parents who were sick. . . . . . Our patients learn to like themselves. Without this new insight, many of them would continue carrying the parental verbal abuse toward themselves.

Perhaps Dr. Meier could show us some Scriptures from our Bible that supports these psychiatric suppositions (based on Humanistic Philosophy)? Meier takes another swipe at parents for failing to treat their children in the way that Meier thinks they should have been treated. According to Meier’s professional opinion, the problems, failings and shortcomings that adults encounter in life are mostly due to the way they were treated by their parents when they were children. That is – their wicked and sinful behavior is their PARENTS FAULT and not the adult children’s responsibility! The Humanistic concept of “parental verbal abuse” is in the eye of the beholder, and is open to dispute – depending entirely on the belief system held by the individual doing the judging.

The modern day concept of: “it’s all my Parent’s Fault” has no basis in Scripture. This concept was invented by atheistic Psychiatrists and is a Humanistic psychological precept, NOT a Scriptural precept or principle.

ON PAGES 70-71 – In regards to Ted & Hilary, a pastor and his wife, {Please see 13 & 14 TED & HILARY” in PART II of this review} ON PAGE 70 Meier said:

When Ted married Hilary thirty years earlier she was beautiful, a strong leader, and a committed Christian. He did notice that she was a little legalistic, like the Pharisees were in Jesus’ day, but he overlooked it.

Let’s see: “she was a little legalistic, like the Pharisees were in Jesus’ day”? Were the Pharisees in the Lord Jesus Christ’s day justa little legalistic”? I don’t think so. The Pharisees during the Lord’s ministry to Israel were NOT just “a little legalistic”; they were extremely legalistic so much so that the Lord rebuked them sharply for omitting the “weightier matters”.

Matthew 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

Does the above condemnation by the Lord Jesus Christ qualify as just a “littlerebuke? If not, then how is it possible that the Pharisees in Jesus’ day were just “a little legalistic”? In the book “Blue Genes”, Meier demonstrates, over and over again, that he has very little spiritual discernment or understanding when it comes to the words of God as found in the Holy Bible.

HOW can Meier possibly know WHAT Hilary was like thirty years ago? Was she his “patient” over that 30 year period? If not, HOW does Meier know she was “a strong leader, and a committed Christian”? Was she “a committed Christian” because of the way she dressed; or the fact that she attended church; or that she participated in church activities? In order to tell if someone is truly “a committed Christian” Meier would have to have the ability to KNOW what is in a person’s HEART! And since only God KNOWS what is in the heart of men and women Meier is fooling himself (and his “patients”) into thinking that he knows what he is talking about!

ON PAGE 71 Meier said:

Ted fell back in love with his wife, this time with her real personality. I say ‘real’ because it was her real personality without the dopamine imbalance. The paranoid Hilary was not at all the ‘real’ Hilary, but Hilary with a chemically defective brain – much like a defective computer or a car without the right kind of gasoline.

Did Ted ever fall out of love with his wife Hilary? HOW can Meier possibly discern between someone’s “real personality” and their “chemically defectivepersonality? Chemicals (like alcohol, etc.) may be able to alter our behavior, but they can not change WHO we are! Meier’s “analogies”, “similes”, and/or “metaphors” will not work, because he is comparing inanimate objects (created by man) with a living man or woman (originally created by God). To equate an inanimate computer with the human brain is a grievous error. An inanimate computer can not operate on its own without someone, directing and controlling it. In the same manner, when it comes to our conduct (i.e. behavior) our brain can not operate on its own without the heart directing and controlling it.

{See: “The Heart of the Matter” @ http://www.thywordistruthkjv.com}

According to the Bible our thoughts 1, meditations 2, considerations 3, perceptions 4, concepts 5, reasoning 6, understanding 7, beliefs 8, imaginations 9, fears 10, doubts 11, counsels 12, intents 13, and desires (affections & emotions) 14, do NOT originate in, or emanate from, our physical brain.

1. Job 17:11; 2. Psalms 19:14; 3. Deuteronomy 8:5; 4. Deuteronomy 29:4; 5. Acts 5:4; 6. Mark 2:8;

7. Proverbs 8:5; 8. Romans 10:9-10; 9. Genesis 6:5; 10. Isaiah 35:4; Luke 21:26; 11.  Mark 11:23;

12. Jeremiah 7:24; 13. Hebrews 4:12; 14. Psalms 37:4; Colossians 3:2

According to the Holy Scriptures the heart (not the physical heart) is the faculty within a man or woman which is the center or seat of all of our thoughts, beliefs, desires, etc. According to the Bible the heart is where our will resides and operates 15 - NOT our brain.

15. Psalms 101:2; Psalms 119:69; Psalms 119:145; Isaiah 32:6; 1 Corinthians 7:37; Ephesians 6:6.

So, WHO do we believe – The Psychiatrists & Psychologists (“Christian” or otherwise) or Almighty God? As they say out in the real world – “it’s a no brainer”!

ON PAGE 72 Meier said in reference to “paranoid blue genes” & “schizophrenia:

although schizophrenics may be quite normal early in life, they usually begin to exhibit more paranoia and decreased social interest when they are in their teens or twenties. They often start isolating from other people, may dress eccentrically, and have weird beliefs and interests . . . . If you have this illness in your genes, then why don’t you have schizophrenis at birth? {Good Question!} Scientists believe these genes are not ‘turned on’ until the teens or twenties. Many of our genes do not do not become active until a certain point in life. Blue genes are the same way and can be dormant for years and then become active.

 Scientists believe”? At this point in time – some scientists “believe” that certain genes are “turned on” at different times in a person’s life. Meier takes that “belief” (not a verifiable scientific fact) and jumps to the conclusion that “blue genes” act in the “same way”! [1Timothy 6:20] Meier is attempting to use another “simile” or “metaphor” to prove a privately held opinion (about so-called “blue genes”), which he has based on a “belief” that some scientists hold in regards to physical genes! This is verifiable “science”? The moment a person “believes” something about a carnal matter (regardless of whether they are a ‘scientist’ or a ‘doctor’) they depart from genuine verifiable science and enter into the realm of hypothesis and theory. Meier can “believe” whatever he chooses to “believe”, but what he can not do is make the claim that what he personallybelieves” is “science” or the “Truth”!

ON PAGES 72-73 Meier explains away the possibility of some so-called “mental disturbances” being caused by evil spirits, since people treated by psychotic drugs are no longer affected. Meier dismisses the possibility with this glib comment: “or else most demons are allergic to psychiatric medication and flee the body of the victim.” Is Meier making the claim that ALL of the people who are afflicted with so-called “mental disturbances” are no longermentally disturbedafter taking psychiatric drugs?  Do the drugs CURE or do they (partially) CONTROL?

ON PAGES 73-75 Meier describes the symptoms preceding a “psychotic break”:

  1. AFFECTIVE DISORDER (flat effect-blank stare)

  1. ASSOCIATIVE DISORDER (can’t think straight)

  1. ANHEDONIA (loss of pleasure)

  1. AMBIVALENCE (doesn’t care)

  1. AUTISM (withdrawn from the real world)

A reading of 1Samuel Chapters 16, 18, and 19 in the Scriptures demonstrates that King Saul exhibited many of the same “symptoms” described above and in Saul’s case those “symptoms” were caused by an “evil spirit” – NOT some mental “psychotic break”.

1 Samuel 16:23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

ON PAGE 77 Meier lists some of the “Blue Genes” that he “believes” we can inherit:

There are depressive blue genes, bipolar blue genes, ADHD blue genes, shy blue genes, even paranoid (dopamine imbalanced) blue genes. . . . . ”.

Let’s see if I can get this straight: Nearly all of the “problems” that adults have with their behavior and conduct are due to either the way their parents treated them (as they were growing up) or their “blue genes” (which they inherited from their parents). In other words, they can not be held personally responsible for anything that they do since, EITHER WAY - it’s ALL their PARENT’S FAULT!

Meier continues:

The good news is that medical knowledge is doubling every five years now, in large part due to the computer age. Many ‘blue gene’ factors affecting behavior, thinking, and emotions can be improved or corrected with modern medicine.

And so today (and in the future) “The good news is that mankind’s “HOPE” is now in “DOPE”?

ON PAGE 81 Meier says:

The teen suicide rate, abortion rate, drug & alcohol abuse rate, and other similar negative behaviors had increased by 75 percent in the last ten years.

I wonder WHY the so-called “blue genes” suddenly “increased by 75 percent in the last ten years”; and HOW does Meier account for such a dramatic “increase” in defective “blue genes”? According to the Holy Scriptures: suicide = SIN; abortion = SIN; drug & alcohol excess = SINNOTNEGATIVE BEHAVIORS”! Which is it going to be - the Bible or Psychiatric Philosophy?

ON PAGES 83-84 Meier states:

ADHD teenagers report more loneliness than other teens. This is largely due to some social awkwardness that accompanies the disease. They unknowingly turn others off with dominating, interrupting, and impulsive behavior. However, with social skills training and medication if needed, these teens do well with others. With proper treatment of any psychiatric condition, loneliness will decrease.

I wonder what physiological “disease” requires “social skills training”, and possibly medication, in order to affect a “cure” (or even a partialcure”). The words “lonely”, “loneliness”, and “lonesome” can not be found in the Holy Bible; while the words “alone” [106 verses] andsolitary” [7 verses] are in The Book. According to Meier, one of the symptoms of the so-called mental “diseaseADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is “loneliness”. How can “loneliness” {a state (or condition) of person’s heart} be a symptom of some “disease”?

ON PAGE 85 Meier claims:

Eighty five percent of those who commit suicide have an underlying mental illness.

HOW does Meier know this to be true? WHY only 85% - Why not 100%? If you discard the concept of SIN being the underlying cause of mankind’s “problems” (as most psychiatrists and psychologists do); WHAT are you left with other than “mental illness”; “mental disease”, “mental abnormality”, or “mental disorders”? After all - if murder, rape, robbery, stealing, lying, cheating, fornication, adultery, etc., (including “dominating, interrupting, and impulsive behavior” are not caused by SIN in a person’s heart then (according to the psychiatrists & psychologists) there must besome other cause” – i.e. MENTAL disease, MENTAL illness, or MENTAL disorder. ANYTHING – BUT SIN! But what do the Scriptures say?

Matthew 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
35 A good man out of the good treasure of the
heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

Matthew 15:16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the
heart; and they defile the man.
19 For out of the
heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

Mark 7:18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
19 Because it entereth not into his
heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?
20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21 For from within, out of the
heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these evil things come from
within, and defile the man.

WHO are we to believe - The Lord Jesus Christ {THE LORD of Glory} or some highly educated, thoroughly schooled, expertly trained, professional “Christian” psychiatrist? I don’t know about you, but as for me - I choose to believe my Lord and Saviour, and I reject any and all supposition, speculation, hypothesis, and theories that run contrary to what His Holy word says; regardless of WHO thinks or says otherwise.

ON PAGES 85-89 Meier puts forth “SOME KEY QUESTIONS”:

1.How loving am I to myself? Do you say negative, derogatory things to yourself that you wouldn’t say to Jesus or your best friend? . . . . . You haven’t decided to love yourself yet. You can only love others as much as you love yourself in a biblically correct way. Jesus said, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’. How can you love your neighbor if you don’t love yourself?”

Another (amongst numerous) miss-application of a Scriptural precept! No where’s in the Holy Bible are we commanded (or encouraged) to “love yourself in a biblically correct way” - whatever that may mean. No where’s in the Bible does it say: “You can only love others as much as you love yourself”. These are Humanistic concepts (i.e. precepts & principles) – NOT Scriptural Truth (i.e. precepts & principals!

2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Meier goes on to say:

Put today’s date inside your Bible cover, and write the following statement:

“I ___________, promise myself from this day forward to be my best friend.

This “teaching” is nothing but pure, unadulterated Psychobabble; and it has NOTHING to do with the “teachings” found in the Holy Scriptures!

2. How many friends do I have who know all of my secrets and love me anyway, unconditionally, in spite of all my faults?” {NO ONE (other than God Himself) knows ALL of another person’s “secrets”, simply because NO ONE knows the heart of a man (or a woman) other than God!} Meier continues: Love is free and unconditional. Trust is earned and conditional, and that’s the way it is supposed to be” . . . . . “but remember that the Bible says that our love and intimacy level is what shows the world that we are disciples of Jesus.

WHICH Bible says: “that our love and intimacy level is what shows the world that we are disciples of Jesus.”? The HOLY BIBLE says NO SUCH THING!

John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

The “Bible” says something totally DIFFERENT than WHAT Meier claims (purports) it to say. We are NOT known as “disciples of Jesus” by “our love and intimacy level”. What pride! What arrogance! The Bible is crystal clear in this matter – “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” Christians are known to       be “disciples” of the Lord Jesus Christ by the “love” that we have “one to another” – NOT by “our love and intimacy level”.

On every hand, and at every opportunity, Paul Meier does not hesitate to ADD to; or SUBTRACT from; or CHANGE; or TWIST & WREST, the Holy words of God in order to support his private interpretations or to suit his purposes. The question arises: How is it that this man wields so much influence amongst those who call themselves “Christians”, when he is shown (proven) to be in error so often?

3.Do I chat with my Heavenly Father; His Son, Jesus; or the Holy Spirit everyday? Do you spend time every day in silence, listening for God to tell you something? Do you look for what He may be telling you in your dreams? There are over150 passages of scripture on dreams alone, including Psalm 16, where we are told that God speaks to us ‘even at night’.

Psalms 16:7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

Did you notice that the word “dream” (or “dreams”) is not in the verse? As a matter of fact, the word “dream” only shows up twice (2 times) in the entire Book of Psalms [Psalms 73:20 & 126:1] in the Holy Bible. Once again, Meier is reading into the Scriptures something that is not there in order to bolster his Humanistic (psychiatric) beliefs about “dreams”. The question arises: WHY the emphasis on “dreams” and meditation as God’s way of communicating with us today, instead of emphasizing God’s written words – as found in the Holy Bible? Just for the Record: The word “dream(s)” shows up only 123 times in 87 verses in the Holy Bible – NOT in “over 150 passages of scripture”. When will Meier ever get it right?

ON PAGES 86-87 Meier states:

James 5 says that if we confess our faults one to another, and pray for each other, we will be healed”.

Meier’s reluctance to cite a verse and quote it in its entirety leaves much to be desired (for a genuine Bible believer). What does James 5 really say?

James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

The changing of the word “may” to “willCHANGES the entire meaning and intent of the verse!

Meier continues:

Eighty to ninety percent of the patients we see in our practices say they don’t have a single friend who knows all their secrets.

And they shouldn’t. Confessing our “faults” one to another is quite a bit different than confessing ALL of our “secrets” (sins?) to a “friend”.

ON PAGE 87 Meier says:

The group therapy sessions in the Meier Clinic Day Program practice James 5:16 several hours a day. Patients share the sad and happy experiences of their childhoods. Some have heart-wrenching stories that include all kinds of abuse.

I do not believe that the God of Scripture had in His Mind the manner in which Meier and his (PAID) Professional colleagues and employees “practice” James 5:16 when He inspired James to write it. The verse is in reference to “BRETHREN” (“righteous men”) NOTtherapists” with “patients” (i.e. payingclients”)

ON PAGE 87 Meier states:

Some leading psychologists say that 85 per cent of a person’s personality is formed by the sixth birthday.

WHO are the “Some leading psychologists”? And WHY not name at least some of the “leading psychologists”? {The atheist Sigmund Freud (an apostate Jew who hated “religion” and Christianity in particular) put forth the THEORY that a person’s personality and character is formed (determined) in their early childhood.}

Are the following “leading psychologists” (founder’s of modern day Psychiatry & Psychology) the kind of “Authorities” that Christians should be looking to when seeking spiritual counsel or advice: Sigmund Freud - an Atheist; Carl Jung - an Apostate Spiritualist (his father was a Lutheran pastor and all eight of his uncles pastors as well); Alfred Adler – an Atheist; Erich Fromm – an Atheist; Abraham Maslow – an Atheist; Carl Rogers – an Apostate (raised in a conservative Protestant Christian home – attended Union Theological Seminary for a while); Albert Ellis – an Atheist; William Glasser – an Atheist; Thomas Harris – a Reprobate; Arthur Janov – an Atheist. Atheists, Apostates, Reprobates, Spiritualists, MaterialistsHUMANISTS and PHILOSOPHERS ALL – WHAT are “Christian” Psychiatrists doing following these men and recommending their PERVERSE HUMANISTIC THEORIES? [Matthew 7:17-19; Luke 6:43-45]

{Please see: “The End of Christian Psychology” by Martin & Deidre Bobgan}

WHICH IS IT? Are our “Blue Genes” responsible for who we are; or is it our culture; or is our home environment responsible?

ON PAGE 87 Meier says:

But Philippians 4:13 says we can change our personality, with God’s help, no matter how old we are.

Does Philippians 4:13 really say that? WHY does Meier continually fail to quote the few scriptures that he cites in support of his erroneous teachings?

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

This review of Meier’s book may seem repetitive, but it is only because Paul Meier continually ADDS, SUBTRACTS, and CHANGES the Holy words of God whenever and wherever it pleases him! A simple reading of Philippians 4:13 demonstrates (again) that Meier will not hesitate to CHANGE God’s word to suit his purpose whenever he wants to prove his point (i.e. “theories”).

ON PAGE 87 Meier takes another offhand swipe at parents (in general):

If our parents were verbally, physically, or sexually abusive, the lies we come to believe about ourselves are even worse.”

WHAT constitutes “verbal” or “physical abuse”? As Christians - do we look to psychiatry and psychology for the answers to these matters or do we look to the Scriptures? HOW could “the lies we come to believe about ourselves” be “worse” than genuine physical or sexual abuse? HOW could Meier possibly know what he claims to be true – IF he never experienced these things himself? What Universe does Paul Meier live in?

ON PAGES 88-89 Meier refers to a song by Paul Simon:

I absolutely love an old song that was sung by Paul Simon. In fact, I still listen to it on a regular basis. The name of the song is: ’Something So Right’. In this psychologically and philosophically deep song . . . . . What a beautiful song, and so deep, God created us to love and be loved. He wants us to find safe people to connect to now. Psalm 68 says God takes the lonely and places them into new families. So get ‘fathered’, ‘mothered’, ‘brothered’, and ‘sistered’ now!”

Just exactly WHAT is a “psychologically and philosophically deep song”? Is it something that glorifies God or is edifying to Christian brethren? Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

And let’s set the record straight. We are chosen to WORSHIP and to GLORIFY Almighty God. God did NOTcreate us to love and be loved” - another Humanistic Concept.

John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

1 Corinthians 1:26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

Meier will quote Mark Twain, Paul Simon, and “some leading psychologists”, but he seems to have an aversion to quoting Scripture; since most of the time he only cites verse references without quoting the actual verses.

ON PAGE 89 Meier gets into childhood and the innocence of young children (according to psychiatry & psychology) and then veers off into BLAMING PARENTS – AGAIN: We express anger at a parent and get punished severely for it, which teaches us to deny our anger from then on. What ever happened to the Scriptural admonition for children to “obey” their parents and the Commandment to “honor thy father and mother”?

Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

ON PAGE 89 Meier claims:

Yet there are a thousand reasons why some people never reach out for the key! ‘I don’t believe in mental illness’, ‘My church said my problem is a lack of faith’, . . . . . ‘How can doctors help a spiritual problem’? . . . . . Knowing the root reasons for loneliness can provide a key to escape. While loneliness is often caused by blue genes, it may also stem from the influences of environment and life choices.”

Again, WHICH is it – “Blue Genes” or our “Environment”? WHY must it be either one or the other? WHERE is God, or His Holy word, in any of the above?

ON PAGE 89 Meier states:

The Meier Clinics treat hundreds of people weekly for substance abuse and other addictions, but detoxifying from heavy alcohol or drug abuse is so life-threatening that we always encourage those clients to go to Calvary Treatment Center in Phoenix, Arizona, for a month then to come with a ‘dry brain’ to our Day Program for another three weeks.

Again, another one of Meier’s many references to the physical “brain” as being the source of our “mentalproblems, instead of the spiritual heart and our sinful nature. “Clinics”, “Clients”, and “Treatment Centers” – sounds like a whole lot of MONEY ($$$) to me. Again - WHERE is God, or His Holy word, in any of the above?

ON PAGES 92-94 Meier puts forth his professional psychiatric solution for the “TREATMENT FOR ANXIETY” (Severe Social Phobia); which, simply put, is DRUGS & COUNSELING - at the “MEIER CLINICS, of course ($$$)! Meier talks about “Social Phobia” (Different?) “avoidant personality disorder” (Shy?); “anxiety disorders” (Overly Concerned?); “relational skills” (Awkwardness?); “assertiveness training” (Propaganda?); and the good old psycho-babble standbygetting in touch with your FEELINGS” (Selfish & Self-Centered).

At what point will born again Christians realize that all of these professional and official sounding words (“phobias”, “disorders”, “relational skills”, “assertiveness training”, etc., etc.) are nothing other than complicated and fancy invented terminology dreamed up by corrupt and unbelieving men to impress those of us who are - obviously uninformed and ignorant of the great strides science has made in the field ofmental health”?

The pipe dreams of psychiatrists & psychologists do not equal “The Truth” [John 17:17]; and neither do they measure up to genuine “Scientific Facts”!

ON PAGES 103-106 Meier describes how he and his friend, Dr. David Mandt, both have “ADD” {“Attention Deficit Disorder”} and he goes on to explain the advantages and disadvantages for people who have ADD. Meier says that his ADD gets him in trouble {NOT his “tongue” – Proverbs 18:21} because he often says what he is thinking without considering the consequences:

I have done live National radio that has reached millions of people, often a million people in a day, for many years now. I have also been kicked off several Christian radio stations for openly sharing sins I committed that day or speaking my mind on controversial subjects without wording it carefully.

However, the Scriptures paint a completely different picture, and gives us totally different explanation for people who are like Meier and Mandt.

Proverbs 21:23 Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

Proverbs 29:11 A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.

Proverbs 29:20 Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

James 3:3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

Meier EXCUSES his and David Mandt’s careless speech or erroneous conduct with: “We both plead INNOCENT and BLAME most of the TROUBLE we get into in this regard ON OUR GENES.” I wonder (after reading the foregoing Scriptures) IF God will EXCUSE their speech or conduct?

Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Both Meier and Mandt MAJOR in the HUMANISTIC PHILOSPHY of Psychiatry & Psychology; and merely TACK-ON God or the “bible” whenever it is convenient in explaining their speech, their personal conduct, or their life’s work.

ON PAGE 112 Meier claims:

In my own life, I was the poor son of a third-grade educated mom and a carpenter dad, but God gave me two dreams one night at age sixteen that took my own ADD world into a different path. And God obviously did the same for you, David {Dr. David Mandt}

WHY would anyone describe their mother (or father) as “a third-grade educated mom”? WHAT is the significance in the “education” or “schooling” of a parent {The Lord Jesus Christ was a Carpenter}? Is this HOW Meier measures people (i.e. by their educational status?) Meier’s reliance and emphasis on the importance of “dreams” in a person’s life takes on new meaning when we see that his belief about “dreams” began with his own “private personal experiences”.

ON PAGE 116 Meier states:

I have significant ADHD” {“Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder”} and have taken medications for years which increase my ability to concentrate and focus. For many years, I ‘toughed it out’ without medication. But when I actually thought and prayed about it, I decided that if I can take better care of my patients by having significantly improved focus and concentration, then it would probably be a sin for me to refuse meds.

But the “meds” have not helped Meier increase his ability to discern and understand spiritual matters. Entertainers and musicians have often taken various drugs in order to better focus and concentrate on their craft and heighten their performance! The END justifies the MEANS!

ON PAGES 117-120 Meier gives his personal opinion about “ADHD” and some of the theories that now abound on its existence and how it should be treated. As you read through all of the speculation and hypothesis try substituting a known physicaldisease” in place of “ADHD” and observe the results: Not everyone with ADHD needs medication. {A “disease” that requires medication for some people who are afflicted, and no medication for others afflicted with the SAME “disease”?} Every child with ADHD, on medication or not, should be involved in a ‘Social Skills Training Group’, as ADHD kids lag behind others in social maturity. {A “disease” that requires “a Social Skills Training Group”? WHAT is considered social maturity”?} About 50% of kids ‘grow out of ADHD’ in late adolescence or early adulthood. {A “disease” that 50% of the people afflicted with it - “grow out of” as they GROW UP?} “In the next decade we will learn so much more about how ADHD works and cue in on safer and more effective treatments. We are considering it a ‘blue gene’ in this book . . . . {Is Meier confessing that some of the “treatments” being used today – are NOT “SAFE”?} “A whole book could be written on the good aspects of ADHD and we hope to do that soon! {More $$$}We are just thankful that God is constantly helping scientists invent new treatments that help us live longer and more productive lives. {Is our hope in “scientists” and “new treatments” or in God?}

ON PAGES 118-120 At this point Meier included a “Sample Test i.e. 20 True/False questions so the reader can determine if they have ADD or ADHD. {My wife and I took “the test” and (according to “the test”) I have “ADHD” and my wife has “ADD”, and so would most ordinary people.}

ON PAGE 128 Meier states:

Our society today, and Christian society in general, still has a difficult time accepting the fact that chemical abnormalities in the brain can have physical, emotional and, especially, spiritual effects.”

What Meier considers to be a “FACT” is still considered “THEORY” by many people who have “sound minds” [2Timothy 1:7] and who can still think straight (including many psychiatrists).

ON PAGES 128-131 Meier describes “bipolar disorder” and his recommended “cure”:

Vitamins w/essential amino acids – trptophan,norepinepheriue, tyrosine, choline, with vitamin B6 are helpful to build up the Serotonin, norepinephrine, GABA, and dopamine to prevent genetic mood swings, but vitamins are not enough.

All bipolar patients should be on a mood stabilizer, and some should be on an antidepressent. Many bipolar patients can now get by just on Lamictal, Geodon, or Abilify, or Seroquel. Keppra and Gabitril also look very promising.

I wonder, what about all of the millions of people who have lived (and died) in the past 6,000 years who were so unfortunate not to have such “very promisingDRUGS to prevent their “mood swings”? Is Almighty God going to give them “A PASS” – because they were “bipolar” or genetically inclined to SIN? I Don’t Think So!

ON PAGE 129 Meier states:

Some bipolars still have severe, suicidal dips, even on a mood stabilizer, so we add an antidepressant, with Wellbutrin-XL being the first choice. If the patient has side effects on Wellbutrin-XL, such as excessive shakiness, then we go to one of the more risks serotonin antidepressants.

This is genuine “science”? This is sound medical practice?

ON PAGE 130 Meier talks about a “sadness level”:

But sadness itself usually gets about ten percent better each week for ten weeks. {And then PRESTO – they are “CURED”? Well not quite!} . . . . . After ten weeks, 75 per cent of them come back and report that this is the best they have ever felt in their lives, or at least in many years.”

What about a year later - or five years later - or ten years later? What about those people (the remaining 25 per cent) - who did not get better and are still “sad”?} “SADNESS” IS (NOW) A “SICKNESS”? NOT according to the Holy Scriptures!

Ecclesiastes 7:3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

ON PAGE 130 Meier claims:

We do research on all of our Meier Clinic Day Program patients, measuring their level of symptoms when they come in and repeating the same questions when they go home three weeks later.

So, according to Psychiatry & psychology, whether a patient is cured (or not) is determined by how the patient “feels” after a few weeks of “treatment”, instead of some scientific measuring standard? In the genuine practice of medicine a doctor can determine whether a patient is getting better (or not) through some scientific measuring guide. In psychiatry & psychology the patient determines whether they are getting better by how they “feel”.

Meier continues:

The average for the past several years is a significant improvement in every area, with a 50 per cent improvement in sadness level {How does one “measure sadness”?}, after two to three weeks of treatment. If they were only receiving meds, there would only be a 30 per cent improvement in sadness level after three weeks, but the education and group therapies and individual therapy all help their mood as well.”

All of the so-called “research” (and Meier’s allegedresults”) are based entirely on SUBJECTIVEFEELINGS”!

ON PAGE 130 In reference to whether “antidepressants” work or don’t work – Meier says:

. . . . But if a person has bipolar relatives or has some bipolar spectrum tendencies {whatever that may mean?} in his or her  genes somewhere back there in the family history, then instead of working well, the antidepressants usually will either not work, or else precipitate a manic or hypomanic (miler than manic) episode .”

Again, a totally subjective conclusion that is basically meaningless, but which gives the doctor an “OUT” (or an “EXCUSE”) IF his (or her) prescription medicines FAIL to work; or worse - IF they actually CAUSE someone to get WORSE! This subjective reasoning is an extremely clever FAIL-SAFE for practicing psychiatrists – just in case.

ON PAGE 131 Meier confidently states:

Anyone who gets manic or hypomanic on a Serotonin antidepressant is almost certainly bipolar.

Amongst sound thinking people Meier’s last statement is known as “CIRCULAR REASONING”! No matter what happens, if the patient gets better – it’s due to the medication; if the patient gets worse - it’s the patient’s fault! Either way – the doctor can not be held responsible for any of his (or her) actions. “Almost certainly” - this is “science”? This is genuine “medicine”? Again, substitute a known illness or disease in place of “bipolar” and see if Meier’s statements concerning “bipolar disorder” measure up to scientific facts or make any sense for that matter.

ON PAGE 131 Meier continues:

IF someone inherits bipolar spectrum disorder, it usually shows up a third of the time each in teens, twenties, or thirties. But some children exhibit it and some elderly get it for the first time.

The statement: “it usually shows up” is not very specific – especially when some “children”, some “teens”, some “twenties”, some “thirties”, and some “elderly” are included in the broad statement. Just exactly WHO is left out of Meier’s “diagnosis”?

ON PAGE 131 Meier goes into a short explanation as to WHY he “thinks”, or “supposes”, or “believes” that antidepressants don’t work on everyone, and why there may bea few hundred people out of a million who commit suicide in spite of the antidepressant.” But he never discusses the real possibility of those antidepressants actually being the CAUSE of some people committing suicide. And where does Meier get the factual data (i.e. numbers) to support his opinion?

ON PAGES 132-137 Meier describes the supposed “Types of Mood Swing Disorders”:

ON PAGE 132 Meier describes:

Dysthymia: This is a chronic, intermittent, low grade depression.

Could this not simply be someone who has a “sad countenance”? [1Samuel 1:18; Nehemiah 2:2-3; Matthew 6:16]?

ON PAGE 133 Meier describes:

Unipolar Depression. These people experience the low periods, but not the highs of bipolar.

Could this not simply be someone who is bitter, miserable, and churlish? [Job 3:20; 1Samuel 25:3] WHY do these “moods” need fancy sounding names, when simple Bible words will suffice? The attempt to “catalog” every single facet of human behavior and conduct is based entirely on supposition and hypothesis, and has no basis in science or Biblical truth.

ON PAGE 134 Meier claims:

Genetic factors have been estimated {based on what criteria?} to account for 50 per cent of depressions, while environmental factors and life choices account for 50 per cent.

So does this “estimate” mean that God can only hold us accountable for only 25% of our behavior and conduct (“life choices” only) if we are “depressed”? GUESS AGAIN!

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Meier goes on:

The earlier the age of onset of a mood disorder, the bigger role ‘blue genes’ are thought to play. Children who develop depression almost always have a strong genetic component influencing it.

Not a very precise or specific “diagnosis”, as with physical illnesses and diseases – and not a very “scientific” conclusion.

ON PAGE 134 Meier states:

Bipolar II. These people swing into three emotional states: 1) depressed, 2) normal, 3) hypomanic.{Meier goes on to describe some of the “symptoms” of “Hypomania” and then talks about} patients with atypical bipolar disorder”.

Just some more professional and scientific sounding words to convince the unlearned that the doctors know what they are talking about. Could Meier be referring to people who are described in the Bible as “unstable souls” [2Peter 2:14], or perhaps “double minded” people?

James 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

ON PAGE 136 Meier gives the following description for people with bipolar II” and “hypomanic” could easily apply to practically anyone. The so-called “symptoms” are so general and non-specific and with so many “exceptions” as to make Meier’s “diagnosistotally subjective.

The majority of people with bipolar II spend more time in depression than hypomania. The typical pattern is to swing up to hypomania for four to seven days, then crash into depression lasting several weeks to months. However, there are numerous exceptions to this pattern, and many people have unpredictable patterns.

Imagine a real doctor describing a well known physical disease in this manner. {Is there any hope for permanent “CURES” from any of these “disorders” or is the only hope a lifetime of DRUGS & THERAPY?}

ON PAGES 136-137 Meier says:

Bipolar I. This is the more severe form, where the person experiences a full blown manic episode.

Is there any hope for a permanent “CURE” from these “disorders” or is the only hope DRUGS & THERAPY for life?

ON PAGES 137-139 Meier describes “Mood Stabilizers”:

FIRST – Lithium (Dangerous to physical health)

SECOND – Anticonvulsants (Depakote, Tegretol” – (Dangerous to physical health)

                    (Newer anticonvulsants – Lamictal, Trileptal, Topamax, Gabatril, and Keppra)

ATYPICAL ANTIPSYCHOTICS (Now called PSYCHOTROPICS) are the newest class of mood stabilizers. Five of these are currently used for bipolar (Abilify, Geodon, Risperdal, Seroquel, and Zyprexa). All of the antipsychotics can supposedly cause diabetes.”

So in addition to being “mentally ill” for life (and being dependent on psychiatric DRUGS), some “bipolar” people can also look forward to contracting a real physical disease for life and being dependent on INSULIN as well?

ON PAGE 140 Meier claims:

With or without treatment, bipolar people have a one in five chance of committing suicide. Without treatment, it is much higher.”

Twenty per cent of all people diagnosed with “bipolar disorder” have a “chance of committing suicide” – “with or without treatment”? HOWEVER – “Without treatment, it is much higher.WHICH is it? WHERE do these “statistics” come from? HOW are these supposedfacts” arrived at? And IF the SAME amount of people taking “psychotropics” and “anticonvulsants” (“one in five”) might commit suicide as those people who are not taking the drugs – WHY bother? {$$$}

Meier goes on:

Having psychological problems such as depression, bipolar, anxiety, or addictions does not mean these problems are a result of moral weakness or lack of will power.

Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Concerning supposedpsychological problems” such as “addictions” - WHICH is it? The Holy Bible says that “drunkenness” is one of “the works of the flesh”; while Meier and his psychiatrist & psychologist cohorts claim concerning “addictions”: that it “does not mean these problems are a result of moral weakness or lack of will power.WHO are we to believe?

Meier continues:

Poor moral choices can result in guilt {as they should!}, low self esteem, fear of rejection, sexually transmitted diseases {Galatians 5:19}, negative impacts on the lives of others, depression, anxiety and addictions. But all of these have genetic components – ‘blue genes’ – as well. And bipolar is nearly totally genetic, regardless of spirituality.

What ever happened to plain old simple “SIN”? What about leading an “overcoming” life? The term “moral weakness” is just a politically correct (PC) word for old fashioned “SIN” or “INIQUITY”! Also please notice how Meier MIXES so-called “mental disorders” in with actual physical SINS!

Meier’s teaching on these matters is clearly corruptLEAVEN” [1Corinthians 5:6; Galatians 5:9]; and his Humanistic theories on human behavior and conduct is totally contrary to God’s word. If modern day “Christians” can not discern these things it can only be due to an appalling ignorance of the Holy Scriptures and an unwillingness to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

Meier is teaching that we just can’t help ourselves; we are just too weak; we just can not control our behavior or conduct; our “problems” are due to our ‘blue genes’ - NOT our sinful nature [Romans Chapter 6, 7 & 8] or our wicked hearts [Jeremiah 17:9; Ecclesiastes 9:3]. To belittle, denigrate, deprecate, disparage, and dismissGUILT” (a function of our Conscience) as being a genetic “WEAKNESS” is to miss the whole purpose of our conscience, and to mislead sinners into thinking that they are helpless in the face of sin and temptation. Providing EXCUSES for sinners to go on sinning (because of their ‘blue genes’) will not go unpunished! The Holy Bible is clear on this matter – despite what Paul Meier and his cohorts may claim to the contrary.

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

What saith the Scriptures in regards to this kind of teaching and those who broadcast, disseminate, and propagate it?

Romans 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches
deceive the hearts of the simple.

2 Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

2 Corinthians 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Galatians 5:7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
8 This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.
9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Philippians 3:2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.
3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

1 Timothy 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Titus 3:10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

Hebrews 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

2 Peter 2:10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
11 Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord.
12 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;
14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
16 But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet.
17 These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.
20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

1 John 2:20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

1 John 2:26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

1 Timothy 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

ON PAGE 140 Meier states:

Even in these cases it is not always the afflicted one with the moral lapse. If your spouse leaves you for another person, out of the blue, his or her moral failure can affect you.

Aside from the obvious “DUH” - WHERE (in the Bible) do we find the idea of a “moral lapse” or “moral failure” isn’t the good doctor talking about SIN? What did Job {some 2,000 plus years before Christ} say about this kind of moral conduct (“lapse” or “failure”)?

Job 31:9 If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;
10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.
11 For this is an
heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.
12 For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

What was it that God said about Job?

Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

Job 1:8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

Job 2:3 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

And so we have a man, of whom God said that he was “perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil”, who states unequivocally that adultery is a “heinous crime” and on the other hand we have a man (Paul Meier – 4,000 plus years later), who claims to be a “Christian” Psychiatrist, who says that when “your spouse leaves you for another person” it’s merely a “moral lapse” or a “moral failure”! WHO are we to believe? Whose teaching and example are we to follow? Why even a PAGAN KING back in Abraham’s day knew better than doctor Meier:

Genesis 20:9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

According to Job (remember - “there is none like him in the earth”) adultery is anheinous crime”; and according to a Pagan King adultery is “a great sin”. However today, according to a famous and successful “Christian” Psychiatrist, adultery is just considered a “moral lapse” or a “moral failure”. PSYCHOHERESY - We’ve sure have come a long way – haven’t we?

Jeremiah 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

ON PAGE 140 Meier makes the comparison of a person whose family has a history of heart disease (a possible physical genetic predisposition) and concludes that so-called “psychological problems” have genetic origins also.

Just as genetic influences can take down the heart of a man with a healthy lifestyle, a genetic influence can accentuate psychological problems in the most moral person you know.

The analogy (simile or metaphor) will not work – although Meier never gives up trying. Physical “genetic influences” can be physically demonstrated (over and over again) through scientific study. A man or a woman does NOT commit adultery because it is in his or her “blue genes”. They commit adultery because it is in their sinful wicked heart!

Matthew 5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already
in his heart.

Matthew 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

Mark 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

In the not too distant past, the Pentecostals used to say: “the devil made me do it”. Today we have “Christian” psychiatrists and psychologists claiming that “myblue genes’ made me do it”. Either way, both false teachings relieve Christians from being responsible for their own behavior and conduct. Over and over again, we find Doctor Paul Meier advocating for Humanistic Psychology over and against the clear teaching of “the Scripture of truth”.

ON PAGES 140 - 141 Meier again compares modern medicine and medical practice concerning physical diseases with so-called psychiatric and psychological “mental diseases” or problems.

If you are a Christian and feel that God shouldn’t allow you to suffer any psychological problems, then quit wasting money on health insurance and throw away your vitamins and blood pressure medicine, because he shouldn’t allow you to suffer these, either. Cannot God work through counselors and medicine to help mental problems as well?”

The answer is simply – NO He will not use counselors and psychiatric drugs to deal with spiritual problems, because physical diseases and so-called “mental diseases” are NOT THE SAME! Meier is offering up a simplistic carnal solution to a genuine spiritual problem – called SIN. Does anyone believe that “Counselors” & PsychiatricDrugs” are as effective as doctors and medicine are for real physical diseases? According to numerous studies - neither are they efficacious when it comes to dealing with genuine spiritual problems due to our sinful nature.

ON PAGE 141 Meier claims:

Blue gene problems are physical; they involve physical abnormalities with physical chemicals that strongly influence how and what you think, as well as how you feel about yourself, your life, others, and God. If you need psychiatric medications and do not have access to a Christian psychiatrist in your area, see a Christian Counselor to deal with your issues, and see a non-Christian psychiatrist who is good at medications. {How is someone supposed to know “who is good at medications”?} Just don’t ask him to discern spiritual matters with you. {Why not?} Or else travel to a good Christian psychiatrist and then have your family doctor follow up if the psch meds are not too complicated.” {$$$}

Why not dump the whole “religious thing” and go “whole hog” down the psychiatric & psychological YELLOW BRICK ROAD? Why go only HALF-WAY with a “Christian” psychiatrist when you can get the “real thing” (the whole Humanistic package) with a secular psychiatrist?

Meier continues:

If you have a complicated ‘blue genes’ problem, like bipolar or psychotic depression, do not go to your family doctor to decide what medications you should be on. See a psychiatrist. You wouldn’t go to your family doctor for brain surgery, would you?

Again, Meier compares “mental illness” with a physical illness and draws a false analogy (simile) to prove his point.}

Meier continues:

. . . . . Most family doctors do not have the time to keep up with all the new psychiatric medicines {i.e. DRUGS}, just as psychiatrists don’t have time to keep up with all the latest meds for physical (non-brain) illnesses.”

Meier continues:

. . . . . There is great help available today. Living life with constant severe mood swings is needless with today’s technology and medication.

WHERE is God in all of the above? WHERE does the Holy Spirit come in? WHERE does the Holy Bible fit into this “picture”? “WHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURES”?

ON PAGE 147 Meier states:

We know that underactivity or overactivity in certain parts of the brain is responsible for psychiatric symptoms.

Meier speaks with confidence “We know”, and yet is it not also just as possible that the heart and the mind use different parts of the brain?

Do thoughts originate IN the brain or do they originate IN the heart and in the mind - which use the brain as modern man uses a computer? {Which is already pre-programmed with ROM (Read Only Memory) for certain basic tasks, but is furnished (or supplied) with RAM (Random Access Memory – i.e. “data”) by the user}

Modern man may be able to see which “part” of the brain is used for certain functions and operations, but what they can not “see” is WHERE these thoughts originate from. Is it possible for a computer technician to “see” WHO is entering data into a computer by observing and examining a hard disk while the computer is operating – of course not! The question remains - WHAT is the CAUSE, and WHICH is the EFFECT? WHICH IS IT? According to the Holy Bible our thoughts originate in our heart and in our mind, which (according to the Scriptures) are NOT physical. Again, as Bible believers WHO do we believe? WHO should we trust?

Meier continues:

These areas of abnormal activity are accompanied by brain chemical imbalances also. Psychiatric medicine today focuses on restoring the balance of brain chemicals, which in turn can correct the abnormal area of activity. The question from the beginning, which still remains, is, ‘what causes these abnormalities in the first place’? {Precisely. WHAT is the CAUSE? Does a “chemical imbalance” in the brain CAUSE wicked and evil behavior, or does a wicked heart (from which ALL SIN originates) CAUSE a “chemical imbalance” in the brain?} Why do those who have them usually have them part of the time, especially if it is genetic?”

What follows is a convoluted attempt (on Meier’s part) to assign our “abnormalities” (SINS?) to a physical part of our brain (the hypothalamus) in order to explain WHY: IF our problems are the result of “blue genes” – WHY are they in operation only “part of the time”?

Meier tries to explain his dilemma: In other words if you have ‘blue genes’ for depression, why are you not depressed every single day? What enables you to go days, weeks, or perhaps months feeling good without any treatment? {Compare to a real genuine physical disease.} Hormones could be the key to this puzzle!”

Of course, something must be the cause of this glaring inconsistency; if not, Meier is stuck with an unsolvable dilemma – i.e. “Blue Genes” that operate ONLYpart of the time”! What follows is another attempt (analogy) to equate a supposed mentaldisorder” or “disease” with a real physical disease.

ON PAGE 148 Meier says:

Genes often carry out their function through hormones, so imbalanced hormones could be the result of malfunctioning genes. . . . . . Hormones regulate bodily functions, which include chemicals, so hormone irregularities can result in brain chemical abnormalities. There you have it; it’s about as clear as mud. The truth is also that we’re not sure which one is the cart and which one is the horse.

When it comes to the “truth” about psychiatry & psychology”, perhaps truer words have never been spoken by a devoted “Christian” Psychiatrist than: “There you have it; it’s about as clear as mud. The truth is also that we’re not sure which one is the cart and which one is the horse! From what I can gather from doctor Meier, he and his colleagues aren’t sure whether our supposed “mental problems” stem from our “blue genes” or whether they stem from our “hormones” - which may mean that we might not have “Blue Genes” at all – but instead we might have Blue Hormones (???). After nearly 150 pages of psychobabble and psychoheresy the truth finally comes out: “The truth is also that we’re not sure”! And Christians pay money to this man and other “Christian” psychiatrists & psychologists for counseling and healing of “mental disorders”? Christians in the Western World are trading in God’s TRUTH for this mess of pottage?

Meier then goes on to try to explain his “problem” (dilemma?) by another analogy – comparing:

the whole gene-hormone-neurotransmitter connection as your favorite professional football team”.

I am not joking! Meier has gone from trying to tie supposed mental disorders and diseases to real physical diseases to comparing them to (I kid you not) a “professional football team”.

Meier conjures up the following:

The gene is the team owner. It is his job to decide who the players will be for his particular team. The coach is the hormone. It is his job to regulate the players, telling them how to carry out the plays. The players are the neurotransmitters, or brain chemicals. They are the ones in the trenches actually getting the job done (or not).

Let’s say a psychiatric disorder is a losing team (one not getting the job done). There could be several reasons for this: The owner failed to hire enough good players (blue gene) or because he was an idiot (malfunctioning gene). Good players may have been on the team, but the coach didn’t know how to stimulate them to play (hormonal problem). The problem could be the fault of the players. They could have several that are sick, injured, or under the influence of drugs (neurotransmitter imbalance).”

ON PAGES 148-149 Meier continues with his “analogy”:

The solution could be changing owners (gene replacement therapy). This might make things better or worse {that’s reassuring!}. Solving the problem by starting with the players is another solution. Treating the sick, injured, and drug abusing players {with “different” DRUGS?} will definitely help them perform better, along with adding extra players to help carry the load (counseling and pharmacological {i.e. more DRUGS!}) therapy and improved nutrition. Psychiatry today focuses on helping the players or coaches. We have had more success and also found that it is more predictable to treat players.

And, once again, WHERE is God in all of the above? What do the Scriptures have to do with any of it? Or for that matter – where is any real genuine “science” or even “common sense” in any of Meier’s feeble “analogy” (i.e. fable)? [1Timothy 1:4; 2Timothy 4:4; 2Peter 1:16]

Meier is only dealing with the physical (primarily the physical brain) realm. Where does a man’s “heart” (our motivator); “mind” (our facilitator); and “conscience” (our regulator) come into play? {None of them are “physical”} And what part does the “spirit” (our life) of a born again child of God (a genuine Christian) play since it has been “quickened”? And what part does the Holy Spirit of God play since He now lives within genuine born again children of God?

Meier focuses only on the “physical”, but he has left out (or neglected) those spiritual aspects of men (and women) that separate us from the rest of God’s creatures. Man is a spiritual being living within a physical body. Man’s soul, spirit, heart, mind, and conscience are NOTphysical”! HOW can men and women be cured of so-called “mental disorders and diseases” when, aside from the many real physical diseases that plague us, all of our “problems” stem from a fallen and corrupt; wicked and evil sinful spiritual state (it’s called - our sinful nature). HOW can this corrupt nature be “fixed” by “chemical means” (i.e. DRUGS) IF the heart of the “problem” is “spiritual” in nature and NOTphysical”?

Meier’s whole premise is a THEORETICAL CONSTRUCT, based on hypothesis, supposition, and some apparent successes. The fact that we can now study and observe some of the various functions and operations of the physical brain does not mean that we can, through study and observation, know HOW “thoughts”, “desires”, and “emotions”, etc. (i.e. the issues of life) arise within a person [Proverbs 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.].

However, we can know much about “the issues of life” if we take the time to study the Holy Scriptures (found in the Holy Bible – i.e. The King James Bible) to see what they have to say about our body (i.e. “flesh”), soul, and spirit {Our SUBSTANCE}; and our heart, mind, and conscience {our FACULTIES}. There is NOSubstitute” for the TRUTH - even if the “Substitute” is wrapped in pseudo-scientific jargon and hypothetical psychiatric and psychologicalTheory”.

ON PAGES 150-164 We are given a short description of different hormones and the effects they have on the physical body and the probable effects they may have on us “mentally”; and the most effective drugs on the market to help a physical disorder, and, of course, the recommended drugs that may (or may not) help whatever “mental disordermight be caused by the physical disorder. As you can see – Psychiatry/Psychology is not “an exact science”.

The list of Hormones described by Meier:

·   THYROID HORMONE: The Fuel

·   CORTISOL: The Stress Hormone

·   TESTESTERONE: It’s a Guy Thing

·   DHEA: Fountain of Youth o r Snake Oil

·   ESTROGEN: It’s a Girl Thing {women outnumber men at least 2 to 1 in “depression”}

·   MELATONIN: The Body Clock Hormone

ON PAGES 165-178 - Chapter Ten deals with: Nutrients, Vitamins, and Blue Genes

In describing his own physical health, Meier states that he had been very fortunate for having excellent health and after having his first thorough physical exam by a medical doctor (at age 58) he found that there were physical indicators that indicated that he might start to have physical problems soon. The following is what he had to say about this state of affairs.

Meier stated:

The cardiologist said if I went untreated, I could die sooner from a heart attack or stroke. How much sooner? I asked, so I could make an educated vote on whether it was worth giving up on one of my primary pleasures in life – carbs! ‘I don’t know’, he said with a laugh, seeing where my irresponsible brain was leading me. {Notice: According to Doctor Paul Meier – It is NOT his “deceitful heart” (a Scriptural precept) that is “leading” him; instead (according to the good doctor) it is his physical “brain” (a Humanistic psychiatric premise) that is “leading” him.} ’Could even be in the next five years’. That got my attention. I was scared. I believe I will go to heaven when I die, but I still sort of like doing things I am used to here on earth for some reason.

A typical response from Meier - not very specific and definitely not Scriptural.

After becoming convinced to alter his diet and start on vitamins Meier teams up with a couple of his friends and together they come up with the PERFECT VITAMIN SUPPLEMENT - for both Physical & “Mental” Health. (Another avenue to increase the $$$ for Meier’s coffers?}

Meier states:

The vitamins my cardiologist recommended were very expensive, since I bought so many of them individually. Dwight Johnson, . . . . . and his business partner, Robbie Gowdey, former personal assistant to Bill Bright of Campus Crusade for Christ, came through again. After many years of resisting their requests to work with them on vitamin development, I was finally convinced to help them develop a combination product to take all at once.”

Meier continues:

First they purchased a liquid vitamin formula from a large team of scientists. Then they allowed me, as a psychiatrist concerned about people’s mental health, to add the essential nutrients needed for our brains to make the chemicals that maintain sanity, love, joy, and peace.”

Chemicals” are responsible for maintaining love joy, and peace” in our lives? What saith the Scriptures?

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Love, joy, & peace are the “fruit of the Spirit” – NOT the fruit of the Chemicals in our brains!

WHEN will Doctor Paul Meier ever get it right?

ON PAGE 170 Meier states:

As a long-time friend of Focus on the Family {Focus on the Family prints Meier’s books}, I want to make it clear that it is not the mission of Focus on the Family to endorse products. Thus, they do not in any way endorse the liquid vitamin that I helped develop, promote, and from which I make an endorsement fee.

Of course, the fact that this new product might make a lot of money (both in the market and in the Meier Clinics) never crossed Meier’s mind - since, according to Meier, his over all consideration is: “as a psychiatrist”, he is mainly concerned about people’s mental health”. If Meier is genuinely “concerned about people’s mental healthWHY is he accepting an “endorsement fee”? It couldn’t possibly be “all about the money” – could it Doc? [1Timothy 6:10]

ON PAGES 170 - 171 Meier reiterates his earlier claim:

. . . brain amines are what God makes everyday in our brains, {Where is the Scientific Proof or Scripture? God ceased creating on the sixth day.} if we eat enough of the building blocks to build them with. {What about “fasting”?} They are the most important chemicals in our entire bodies. They give us sanity, love, joy, peace, patience and even help direct our thoughts and emotions.

Once more Meier has “chemicalsREPLACING the Person and work of the Holy Spirit.

The right CHEMICALS (in the right amount) give us sanity”? NOT according to the Holy Scriptures! According to the Holy Bible it is God who gives us a “sound mind”.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

The right CHEMICALS (in the right amount) give us love, joy, peace, patience”? NOT according to the Scriptures! According to the Holy Bible it is God who gives us those things.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and
truth;)
10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

The right CHEMICALS (in the right amount) help direct our thoughts and emotions”? NOT according to the Scriptures! According to the Holy Bible it is our “HEART” that directs our thoughts and emotions.

Job 17:11 My days are past, my purposes are broken off, even the thoughts of my heart.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Psalms 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Proverbs 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

1. Job 17:11; 2. Psalms 19:14; 3. Deuteronomy 8:5; 4. Deuteronomy 29:4; 5. Acts 5:4; 6. Mark 2:8;

7. Proverbs 8:5; 8. Romans 10:9-10; 9. Genesis 6:5; 10. Isaiah 35:4; Luke 21:26; 11.  Mark 11:23;

Will Paul Meier ever get it right? The right CHEMICALS (in the right amount):

·   DO NOTgive us sanity”.

·   DO NOTgive us love, joy, peace, patience”.

·   DO NOT help direct our thoughts and emotions.

In baseball it’s THREE STRIKES and YOU’RE OUT! WHICH will it be - God’s word or the “word” of a man who has demonstrated (over and over again) that he will not hesitate to ADD, SUBTRACT, and CHANGE the Holy words of God to suit his own purposes? Unfounded and fabricated assertions (regardless of who supports them) contrary to the clear testimony of the Scriptures are not just harmless or innocent errors. They are false teachings which lead to false doctrine and heresy.

Meier continues with his misleading assertions:

Most people maintain adequate levels of the brain chemicals responsible for sanity, as well as experiencing love, joy, peace through spiritual disciplines, forgiveness, confessing our faults to one another, and grieving our losses. And even if we deplete our own brain chemicals by holding grudges or excessive shame, the spiritual things listed above will usually restore those chemicals.

WHAT are “spiritual disciplines” {a Roman Catholic concept}? Some of the “spiritual things” listed, are “the Fruit of the Spirit” – NOT the right “chemicals” (in the right amount) in the brain. The statements and beliefs (above) expressed by Meier are so general and obscure as to render them meaningless. They are without spiritual significance or substance.

Does bad (or evil) behavior and conduct “deplete our own brain chemicals” or does the absence of the right chemicals (in the right amounts) in our brain cause bad (or evil) behavior and conduct? WHICH is it?

Meier continues:

The exception to this general rule would be individuals who are genetically prone to low serotonin levels or other problems with brain chemistry that might predispose them to depression, bipolar disorder, delusions, and other disorders. While diligent prayer, Bible study, and wise counsel will draw them close to God and help them live wisely, it may not restore their brain chemistry to normal {Almighty God and His Holy word “may not” be enough. We mayneed” something (or someone) more – like “Christian” psychiatrists, psychologists, and DRUGS!} - just as many godly people need thyroid supplementation, insulin, or other medications to survive. Before scientists discovered how to replace thyroid hormone or insulin, for example, people who were deficient in these hormones (whether because of heredity or other reasons) became ill and eventually died.

Once again, Meier makes use of another misleading analogy: comparing real physical diseases, and their treatment, with so-called “mentaldiseases (disorders), and their treatment.

Meier continues:

We are extremely fortunate to be living in an era in which there are newer and safer psychiatric medications developed every few months, allowing us to treat so many problems successfully, including suicidal depressions, panic attacks, delusions, hallucinations, obsessive compulsive disorder, ADHD, and mood swings. I love being a psychiatrist in this era.” (Paul Meier, M.D.)

So WHO do we thank - GOD or the Pharmaceutical Companies?

ON PAGES 172 -173 Meier states:

The Bible calls our bodies ‘the temple of the Holy Spirit’. God designed our bodies so that if we took reasonable care of our ‘temples’ by getting enough sleep, eating the right foods, and obeying all the ‘one another’ concepts in Scripture (confessing our faults one to another, speaking the truth in love to each other, loving one another, etc.) then our Serotonin levels will stay high and our spirits will as well.

But it is very important to realize that some people do all of the above and still suffer from suicidal depression because of their ‘blue genes’. For them, antidepressants and adequate nutritional intake of the essential amino acids, especially tryptophan and phenylalanine, and adequate vitamin B6 intake are a must, in order for the spiritual disciplines to do what they normally do in our brains.

Again - WHAT are the “spiritual disciplines”??? WHERE can we find them clearly “defined”? Just exactly WHAT is it that “they normally do in our brains”? HOW do “the spiritual disciplines” operate or function “in our brains”?  Meier is not very specific or forthcoming concerning his fabricated assertions.

ON PAGES 173 Meier claims:

Some Christians think that whenever our brains’ ‘power steering fluid’Serotonin – gets too low, which nearly always occurs {?} when we feel severely depressed, then we should be able to pray and think it back to normal. {WHAT is “normal”? WHO determines WHAT is “normal”?} And do you know what? For some people that is actually true! even many depressed people.

If there is a spiritual cause of the Serotonin depletion, like buried anger or excessive shame, then resolving those things spiritually and forgiveness will eventually straighten out the Serotonin level in most cases. Psychiatrists call depression “anger turned inward. The trouble comes when Christians become simplistic and think this is always the case, and it isn’t.

Again – WHICH is it? Does the “chemical imbalance” in our brain cause us to sin - or does sin in our lives cause a “chemical imbalance”? I wonder WHAT God has to say about all of this?

Ah, now I see - we Christians who question Meier’s simplistic assertions are “simplistic” since we just don’t get it! But so far Meier has failed to convince us with genuine science; or his clever analogies; or his unfounded hypothesis and assertions; or especially with Scripture.

Meier continues:

Those who inherit low serotonin level {HOW is this determined?} cannot pray it or think it up to normal. {HOW can Meier possibly “know” this if he can not read people’s hearts to see if they are sincerely praying or making a genuine effort?} Proper nutrition, to build it up, and medication, to block the reuptake sites and force it to accumulate to a normal {?} level, will bring joy and peace to a person who was biochemically suicidal a few weeks earlier.”

What of a person’s heart condition? Meier criticizes ordinary Christians of becoming “simplistic” – and yet he disregards the spiritual heart of man altogether in devising his carnal solutions to our “problems” (i.e. “the issues of life”); which said solutions he severely limits to the physical realm only; and not only that, he fails to take into account our mind, our conscience, and our spirit also. Meier’s solutions concentrate on just one part of man – our bodies (i.e. the flesh), and for the most part our brain, which Meier thinks and believes is responsible for our thoughts and who we are, in the face of overwhelming Scriptural testimony to the contrary.

Meier then goes on to make the following “flippant remark”:

So, as my radio listeners often hear me say, “if your car runs out of power steering fluid, go ahead and pray, but call Triple-A.” {acleverremark - hardly honoring or glorifying to God}

ON PAGES 180 Meier said:

Mental illness has always carried a stigma. For thousands of years and up to the present, many have linked mental illness to demon possession or oppression, even though only one demon-possessed person in the entire Bible resembled a mentally ill person.{who?}

According to Meier “only one demon-possessed person in the entire Bible resembled a mentally ill person.

What about: the two (2) men in Matthew 8:28-34; the one (1) man in Luke 8:26-39; Mark 5:1-20; the one (1) child (a boy) in Mark 9: 17-27; Luke 9:37-42; and the one (1) man in Acts 16:13-16?

And what about the Scriptural example of King Saul in the Old Testament (I & II Samuel)? King Saul is the best example in the entire Bible of someone who was both possessed and oppressed by an “evil spirit”. How is it that Doctor Meier failed to cite King Saul? How is it that Meier omitted the most demonstrable “stereotype” of spirit possession in the entire Bible? {We might ask: What, “Have ye not read”?}

The account of King Saul’s life in the Scriptures describes a man who was “moody”; “sad” (extremely so); “depressed”; “sorrowful”; “angry”; and often given to “uncontrollable violent outbursts” (even towards his own son!). If Saul were to be examined by today’s psychiatrists and psychologists he would be diagnosed (or labeled) as being “mentally ill” with at least one, or perhaps a combination, of the following so-called “mental disorders”: mood disorder, depression, manic depressive, bipolar I or II (or perhaps Unipolar Depression), anxiety disorders, delusional disorder, schizophrenia, narcissistic, etc., etc., (and there are plenty more); and yet (according to the Bible) King Saul was NONE of those things – The Holy Scriptures clearly testify that he was possessed of an “evil spirit” instead.

Meier falsely (or erroneously) claimed: “only one demon-possessed person in the entire Bible resembled a mentally ill person” – while the Scriptures clearly say otherwise. Don’t you think that it was mighty convenient of “Doctor” Meier to overlook the BIBLICAL FACTS? WHY would anyone trust this man to give them sound advice about anything in the face of his perverse track record concerning the Holy Scriptures? For a man who taught at the prestigious Dallas Theological Seminary for twelve years you would think that “Doctor” Paul Meier would know his Bible better; and you would also think that the most prestigious “Fundamentalist” Seminary in the USA would have been far more careful in hiring someone who not only is as ignorant of the Scriptures as Meier has demonstrated, but who also will not hesitate to ADD, SUBTRACT, or CHANGE the words in Scripture whenever it suits his purposes!

1 John 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

ON PAGES 180 -183 Meier gives a very short history of how “mental illness” has been treated in the last 200 years or so:

Fifty years ago there were no psychiatric medications. . . . . The 1960’s and 70’s ushered in the first medical treatments for depression. Drugs known as monoamine oxidize inhibitors (MAOI’s) and tricyclic acid (TCA’s) were found to improve depression dramatically. These medications, however, had a huge number of side effects, and some people claimed that the meds made them feel worse than the depression did. These drugs were also fatal in overdose. . . . . Lithium was the mainstay of bipolar treatment, along with electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) {Electric Shock Treatment?}, and both are still sometimes used today.

The late 1980’s and early 90’s witnessed a dramatic change in psychiatric medication. Novel drugs came to the market that were non-lethal in overdose, carried fewer side effects, and worked on specific neurotransmitters in the brain. Prozac as the prototype; it worked solely on Serotonin.

Meier continued:

The 1990’s also witnessed an improvement in bipolar medications. The role of GABA in moods and anxiety was further defined. Better antipsychotics also were created that not only improved paranoia and psychosis, but also depression, anxiety, and mania.

In addition to the question of treatment, the underlying question was What actually causes these problems?What factors lead to an imbalance of serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, GABA, and other brain chemicals?

And, according to Meier’s own testimony, the “questionstill remains a mystery: Meier candidly admitted (page 48 of “Blue Genes”): “There you have it; it’s about as clear as mud. The truth is also that we’re not sure which one is the cart and which one is the horse”.

ON PAGES 183 -185 Meier states:

We’ve known for over a century that environment and life choices have a profound effect on mental health.

This is something “NEW”? This is something that only psychiatrists like Freud, Jung, Adler, Rogers, etc., and their ilk suddenly “discovered” only about 100 years ago? Give me a break!

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Has Meier ever read the “Wisdom Books” of the Bible? Has he never read the Book of Job? And what about Psalms; or how about Proverbs and Ecclesiastes; or for that matter, what about the rest of the Scriptures? Over and over again the Bible illustrates that man’s “environment” and “life choicesprofoundly affects his entire being (DUH) – NOT just his “mental health”! Where does “sin” and man’s sinful nature fit into Meier’s “scheme of things” – or does it?

Meier continues:

There has long been speculation that genetics were also involved in personality as well as physical traits. We acknowledge this by statements such as, ‘You act just like your mother’. Only in the last few decades have we started substantiating ‘blue genes’.

Ezekiel 16:44 Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter.

When it comes to “speculation” about the human condition the psychiatrists & psychologists are about 2,500 years OUT OF DATE!

What follows is Meier’s personal assessment of some of the positive (and possibly negative) effects this “new knowledgemay have on individuals and mankind in general. And although Meier and his co-authors are against embryonic stem cell research – they still hold out the hope that stem cell research may lead to “amazing new treatments in psychiatry”.

ON PAGE 185 Meier states:

Scientists will continue to learn to identify future diseases early and treat many blue genes. If your child has the genes for schizophrenia, treatment can be started before a psychotic break happens. This will probably prevent him from ever becoming psychotic.

We will also have the ability to know who will develop dementia. We can then start treating early, before the first symptoms, adding years of quality life. In fact, most psychiatric disorders can be treated before they manifest, including depression, bipolar disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorder. This will certainly lesson their impact or prevent them altogether.

How does Meier (and his colleagues & cohorts) expect to implement this Grand Experiment? Will it be by MANDATORY SCREENING at birth? And what if some parents object? Will the government FORCE parents to accept the “EXPERTS” (scientists, psychiatrists, & psychologists) diagnosis (opinion) and “treatment” – like MANDATORY INNOCULATIONS for infants today? {All for “our own good” – of course!}

Talk about an Orwellian Nightmare! What happens if the “experts” determine (at birth) that an infant’s “blue genes” indicate that he/she is going to be a “problem child” and needs intensivetherapy” and “treatment” (i.e. drugs) and what if they take away the infant from the parents to “make sure” it gets the “proper treatment”? Or what if the “experts” determine (at birth) that an infant’s “blue genes” indicate he/she is a “lost cause” and not worth the bother or trouble? Will the infant then be exterminated, since that will be the “humane” (i.e. Humanistic) thing to do, since it will save the parents and society all the money, trouble, and heartache?

ISN’T “SCIENCE” WONDERFUL? Shouldn’t we all be “thankful” and pin all our “hopes” on the people who have brought us the Atom Bomb, Nerve Gas, Chemical Weapons, and the myriad of other “blessings” that have benefited mankind for the past 100 years or so?

ON PAGES 185 -186 Meier claims:

Amazing new treatments in psychiatry are just around the corner. The whole approach to brain disorder is changing. {Does that mean that past approaches and treatments were wrong or in error? If so, why should we have any confidence in a “NEW approach”?} Currently psychiatric disorders are diagnosed by directly observing a person’s behavior or asking questions in a structured interview or questionnaire. There are no lab tests yet that can diagnose, for instance bipolar disorder.

Strange “diseases” (i.e. “psychiatric disorders”) indeed! A “disease” that is determined “by directly observing a person’s behavior or asking questions in a structured interview or questionnaire”; and for which “There are no lab tests yet that can diagnose” it.

Is Meier admitting that for the past 150 years the so-called “diseases” (or “disorders”) discovered and diagnosed by Psychiatrists & Psychologists have been based solely on the “speculations”, “suppositions”, “theories”, “hypothesis”,  conjectures”, and “OPINIONS” of men (the so-called experts - most of whom were Humanists and Atheists); without any real genuine scientific evidence? And for this leavened mess we are expected to chuck our Bibles and believe their conclusions; embrace their counsel and follow their recommendations? NO THANKS!

Meier continues:

“(Quacks will charge you thousands of dollars to check your hair follicle or fingernail or a blood or urine sample to diagnose bipolar disorder and other such things, but those tests are utterly worthless). But SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) scans are now allowing psychiatrists to objectively diagnose many psychiatric disorders for the first time.”

Again, does this mean that up until recently allpsychiatric disorders” have been diagnosed and determined on a SUBJECTIVE basis? Psychiatrists and psychologists have been delving into “the issues of life” for well over 100 years without coming up with any permanent solutions other than continuous THERAPY and DRUGS (T&D). According to the Holy Scriptures - ALL “the issues of life” proceed from out of the heart, which (according to the Bible) ONLY God knows. Does any genuine Bible believer really and truly believe that SCIENCE & MEDICINE are going to be able to tap into the human heart, mind, conscience, spirit, and soul (which are all spiritual and not physical) through the “brain” and CURE people of so-called “mental disorders”?

I repeat, according to the Bible - ONLY GOD KNOWS the human heart:

1Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

1Chronicles 28:9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

Has there ever been a man (living or dead) who has ever been able to searchall hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts” of other men? And yet this is what psychiatrists & psychologists claim they can do.

Psalms 44:21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

Acts 1:24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

Acts 15:8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

1Kings 8:39 Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)

2Chronicles 6:30 Then hear thou from heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and render unto every man according unto all his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou only knowest the hearts of the children of men:)

1John 3:20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

Since the beginning of the creation no man who has ever lived (with the exception of the Lord Jesus Christ) has ever been able to know what is in another person’s heart. And no amount of technology, medications, or psychiatric & psychological theory is going to change that fact! So the question arises: WHY are “Christian Doctors” trying, through carnal means, to know and understand the human heart – WITHOUT the Scriptural teaching on or about it?

The word “heart” (or “hearts”) occurs approximately 950 times in 880 verses in the Holy Bible; if we are to get any understanding at all about the heart, the Bible should be the place that all Christians should go to for any knowledge, discernment, and understanding about it. The Holy Scriptures should be the Christian’s FINAL and SOLE AUTHORITY in all matters of faith and practice (and that includes any and all theories, suppositions, or opinions concerning so-called “mental illnesses” or “psychiatric disorders” - IF they run contrary to the Holy words of Scripture).

In addition to the approximately 880 verses on the heart in the Holy Bible, there are an additional 470 verses on the soul; 128 verses on man’s spirit; 108 verses on the mind; and 30 verses on the conscience. There is far more information about the corrupt condition and perverse nature of all men and women contained within these verses than any mere man could ever assimilate in a lifetime.

What are men (especially “Christian” Psychiatrists & Psychologists) doing – pretending that they can possibly KNOW and UNDERSTANDall the imaginations of the thoughts” of other men? How is it possible that they can “know” what ONLY GOD KNOWS?

Romans 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

ON PAGE 186 Meier states:

Likewise, computed Tomography (CT) Scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allow us to observe the brain’s anatomy. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and SPECT scans show us how the brain is functioning. These scans detect what areas of the brain are using the most glucose, hence the most active (the brain uses glucose for energy). {All of the above technology may make it possible to observe brain function – But what they don’t tell us is the HOW or the WHY.} We know that certain psychiatric symptoms are due to overactivity or underactivity in specific areas of the brain.

Between “overactivity” and “underactivity” Meier covers all of his bases (Once again, not being very specific) – but how can it be both ways?. Meier claims that he “knows that certain psychiatric symptoms are due tobrain activitynot a “seared, defiled, or evil conscience”; not a corrupt mind; and not a wicked and deceptive heart. According to Meier’s assertions, all of our problems (i.e. “psychiatric symptoms”) are due to malfunctioning brain activity. , and our sins can not be helped since our brains are not functioning properly or do not have the right amount of chemicals in the right places.

Some Questions: Just exactly HOW is “overactivity” or “underactivity” determined? Upon WHAT basis is “overactivity” or “underactivity” determined? And WHO determines what is “overactivity” or “underactivity”? And does “overactivity” or “underactivity” (vague generalizations – again) in specific areas of our brain causepsychiatric symptoms” (SIN)? OR does SIN in our lives cause the “overactivity” or “underactivity” and the “chemical imbalance” in our brains? WHAT is the “cause”?

Psychiatrists and psychologists are playing at God. They actually believe that they will eventually be able to cure people’s “psychiatric symptoms” and “mental problems” through carnal means. We shall see- we shall see.

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Meier continues:

For instance, an overactive limbic system relates to symptoms of depression. Overactivity in an area known as the cingulated gyni results in obsessive thoughts (like songs or commercials that won’t leave your head) and compulsive behaviors (like counting things all the time, rechecking things several times needlessly, excessive hand washing, hoarding newspapers or antiques, repeated hair twirling, etc.).

The term “compulsive behaviors” is psychobabble for “I can’t help myself”; or “I can’t control my behavior”; or “something compels me to act the way I do”. In other words “compulsive behaviorsremoves all responsibility from a person for their personal conduct. Once again – Meier deals in Broad Generalizations that could apply to almost anyone (many of these “compulsive behaviors” were once simply referred to as bad or strange habits). How can this be called, or considered, “SCIENCE”? These so-called “psychiatric symptoms” are far too vague to accurately measure, never mind track.

ON PAGES 186 - 187 Meier claims:

Underactivity in the left temporal lobe is associated with anger problems. The proper medication and/or counseling therapy can correct all these abnormalities, thus relieving the psychiatric symptoms.

How many times is this true? And is the “cure” permanent, long lasting, or just temporary?

Meier continues with his claims:

Ten straight weeks on a higher-than-average dose of any newer serotonin medications will eliminate obsessive-compulsive traits most of the time.”

How many times is this true? And is the “cure” permanent, long lasting, or just temporary?

Meier continues with his claims:

Sometimes these traits, even after 30 or 40 years of constantly having them, will cease within an hour or two after taking even a low dose of one of the newer powerful dopamine medications. . . . .

How many times is this true? And is the “cure” permanent, long lasting, or just temporary?

Meier makes these claims, but where is the scientific proof of permanent cures from these miraculous drugs? I have yet to meet anyone who has been permanently cured from these so-called “psychiatric symptoms” by psychiatric drugs.

Meier goes on to comment on some of the research that is taking place in psychiatry today: SPECT Technology; TMS (Trans Magnetic Stimulation); and then makes this astounding statement:

In ten years, though, even advances like TMS will probably be considered archaic, much as we now view the psychiatric treatments of 50 years ago.

I wonder if Meier has any idea as to what he has just admitted. “In ten years, though, even advances like TMS will probably be considered archaic, much as we now view the psychiatric treatments of 50 years ago.  Fifty years ago (from the publication of the book “Blue Genes”) equals the year 1955; does this mean that for the better part of 50 years (or more) that psychiatrists & psychologists really did not know what they were doing while they were pretending to be “experts”, “professionals”, and “scientists”? Meier did use the word “ARCHAIC” to describe “psychiatric treatments” of 50 years ago.

Could it possibly be that many (if not all) of their “archaictheories, assumptions, & treatments were wrong and even possibly harmful - like the archaic use of bloodletting in the genuine medical profession? If much (if not all) of what they “believed”, “theorized”, and “hypothesized” was “archaic” and off-base (i.e. not true) – WHY should we trust them NOW? WHY should we have any confidence in anyone or anything that is as inconsistent, inconclusive, unreliable, and as deceptive and disingenuous as this mess? It’s called “SCIENCE FALSELY SO-CALLED” in the Holy Bible.

1 Timothy 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

ON PAGE 199 Meier continues with one of his ambiguous and unsupportable analogies:

With a blue gene illness, the “power steering fluids” of your brain (that give you mental and physical power and steer you to use that power of thought and action to accomplish good in the world) are simply leaking out too fast. You inherited reuptake sites that leak. It is as simple as that.

Not according to the Bible. Psychiatric & psychological assessments and diagnosis are far too simplistic, uncritical, and superficial – with no basis in Scripture.

Meier has claimed over and over again: There is no difference with mental health issues.” Meier continually tries to equate so-called “mental health issues” (issues of the heart, mind, conscience, spirit, and soul) to a genuine “physical medical model” – that is genuine “physical health issues”. It can not be done! With most physical diseases and ailments a “real doctor” can scientifically identify the problem and try to treat it or deal with it in a scientifically approved, appropriate, and proven way (based on repetitive reliable data and facts). On the other hand, most “Mental health issues” have only theory, conjecture, speculation, and supposition to rely on (without any scientifically reliable data to support them).

Once again Meier resorts to the falsepower steeringanalogy. When the comparison of “mental health issues” with physical health issues fails; and the comparison of the brain with a computer fails; there’s always the good old “power steeringploy. To compare our brain and the components it may need with an automobile power steering unit is so outrageous and ludicrous, it would be laughable – if Meier wasn’t dead serious about his perversebelief” that this is an appropriate and reasonable analogy.

Now let us deal with Facts: FACT: A car is a mechanical invention of man - Adam & Eve were created by God (and we are their biological descendants). FACT: A car is made up entirely of physical parts (a motor, transmission, wheels, tires, brakes, etc., etc.); while men and women are made up of five SPIRITUAL PARTS (Soul, Spirit, Heart, Mind, & Conscience) and only one part that is PHYSICAL (our body = head, arms, legs, hands, feet, heart, lungs, liver, stomach, kidneys, etc., & a brain; which, according to the Scriptures, is NOT our Mind!). [1Corinthians 2:16]

Man is much more than just a physical being (like all of the animals). The Bible presents us with a far different picture of man than all of the Humanistic theories (i.e. “fairy tales”) that are in vogue today. We are no more like a car than a monkey is like a space ship! We are far more complicated than any psychiatrist or psychologist can even begin to imagine!

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” [Psalms 139:14]

Meier continues:

So you take a SSRI antidepressant like Lexapro (SSRI stands for ‘selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor’) and it simply plugs the leaks, {and Presto: Everything is fixed - everything is just fine?} so the serotonin God is making in your brain from the tryptophan and B6 stays in your brain. It is as simple as plugging a leak in your power steering fluid location.

Three times in two paragraphs Meier emphasizes how “simple” the solution is to this issue in life. His claim is “simple”: the “right drug” in the “right amount” will cure you. But can this claim be substantiated with scientific facts? I doubt it.

Meier continues:

Within ten weeks the serotonin level gets high enough again for you to experience love, joy, gentleness, meekness, and patience instead of bitterness, depression, anxiety, irritability, arrogance, and impatience. The latter are all the result of low serotonin levels caused either by genetics or by stress or by sin.

Is the Holy Spirit limited by the amount of serotonin in someone’s brain? So, WHICH is the CAUSE – Genetics; Stress; or SIN? How can anyone “divine” the causes of the problems in a person’s life without the ability to read their heart?

Proverbs 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

ON PAGES 199–207 The remainder of Meier’s book consists of a very short treatise on Meier’s (and the other authors) personal “Christian/Psychological” PHILOSOPHY – under the Titles:

·   “WHAT PEOPLE DO NEED” (Pages 200-204)

·   “A “WHAT PEOPLE DO NOT NEED” (Pages 199-200)

·   NOTE TO ATHEISTS” (Pages 204-206)

·   FINAL ADVICE TO FAMILIES WITH LOVED ONES DEALING WITH BLUE GENES(Pages 206-207)

In the remainder of the book we are presented with an amalgamation of some Bible teaching plus Psychiatry/Psychology/Philosophy & Personal Opinion. Meier’s slick, clever, and cunning Humanistic assertions and solutions (in place of genuine Biblical solutions) for the many difficult issues of life that all men and women are faced with are clearly not Scriptural, nor do they have much genuine scientific proof to support them.

I can not find one good thing to say about the book “Blue Genes”. If the truth be known, the entire book is subtle LEAVEN; very much like most of the rest of today’s so-called “Christian Literature” - that is supposedly designed to “help” the modern day Christian (who has no “Final Authority”) and at the same time earn money ($$$) for the Author (or Authors).

Time after time what is promoted, proclaimed, and declared in the book is in direct opposition to clear Scriptural principals and precepts. IF what Meier and his colleagues assert is true – then my Bible is found to be False. On the other hand, IF the Bible is true (of which I have no doubt) then Meier’s Humanistic Philosophy is found to be FALSE. I, for one, am not going to trade in the Holy words of God for a mess of pottage, cooked up by so-called “Christian” psychiatrists & psychologists!

Romans 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

ON PAGES 199–200: WHAT PEOPLE DO NOT NEED

{Please see PART II of this Review under the Title: INDIVIDUAL CASES SITED IN BOOK

NO.  25 - PAGES 199-200 FRANK HOWARD - for comments on this section of the book.}

ON PAGES 200–201: WHAT PEOPLE DO NEED

Meier’s take on God, and his Humanisticlove principal”:

People today need the same basics of life that people have always needed. They need God, and they need to love and be loved by a few fellow humans who know all their secrets and love them anyway.

WHERE can this vitalprincipalbe found in the Holy Scriptures?

Meier’s take on the Scriptures:

People need daily meditation on Scripture, even if only a few minutes a day. Hebrews 10;24 says people also need to be regular attendees of a local church, where they get spiritually fed, take part in the Sacraments (baptism and holy communion), and get lifelong emotional support.

Meier takes the minimalist’s approach to the Scriptures in the face of the Scriptural admonition:

Deuteronomy 11:18 Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.
19 And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

20 And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates:
21 That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.

That’s quite a bit DIFFERENT than just “even if only a few minutes a day” - don’t you think?

Let’s contrast Job’s attitude toward God’s Holy words as compared to Meier’s.

Job 23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

Job’s attitude towards God’s Holy words is a far cry from Meier’s “a few minutes a day”!

And what of the Lord Jesus Christ teaching concerning God’s Holy words?

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Luke 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

It is quite clear that the Scriptural teaching concerning our attitude towards God’s Holy words and Meier’s attitude towards them are miles apart.

Meier said:

Hebrews 10;24 says people also need to be regular attendees of a local church, where they get spiritually fed, take part in the Sacraments (baptism and holy communion), and get lifelong emotional support.

Hebrews 10:24 actually says:

Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

Meier’s continual reluctance to quote the words of God that he sometimes alludes to in support his false teaching demonstrates his lack of reverence for God’s words and his failure to heed them. In this particular case Meier sloppily cites the WRONG VERSE and his careless attitude towards the Scriptures comes shining through. The verse he meant to cite was Hebrews 10:25. Please notice: the words “local churchare NOT in the verse.

Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

And what about Meier’s teaching about taking part in “the Sacraments”? Isn’t Meier aware that the word “Sacrament” (or “Sacraments”) can not be found in the Holy Bible? Does Meier even know that the word “Sacrament” is a Roman Catholic invention to describe their blasphemous and heretical practices concerning the “Lord’s Supper”? Or for that matter that even the word “Communion” is the Roman Catholic word for what genuine born again Christians call “The Lord’s Supper”? Can Meier ever get it right? Or is he so unconcerned about what the Bible truly says that it really doesn’t matter to him as long as he can use it to further his personal agenda?

And finally, Meier’s comment about attending a “local church” so that the “attendee” can “get lifelong emotional support” is psychobabble (or more properly “psychoheresy”). Christians attend church to worship and glorify God; to receive edification; and to FELLOWSHIP with other Christians – NOT to “get lifelong emotional support”! WHEN will Meier ever get it right?

Meier continues:

Because of modern research, we know that families that are intact, with both a mother and a father, and families who attend church weekly, and teens that attend a youth group regularly, have significant better mental and physical health and life expectancy than those who grow up in a broken family system.

Isn’t “modern research” wonderful? What would we do without it? We (those of us who are genuine Bible believers) also “know” that, generally speaking, what Meier said is true; but we know these things because of our personal study of the Scriptures - NOT because of “modern research” or anything else that psychiatrists & psychologists might come up with in their Humanistic studies. And by the way, I can not find the term “teens” anywhere’s in my Bible – I wonder where that concept came from?

ON PAGE 202 Meier states:

When our staff teaches them the information in this book, {i.e. “Blue Genes”} they see that depression – even very severe bipolar depression – improves significantly even though it may require lifelong meds. They discover that the brain is just one more organ, like the pancreas, or thyroid. If those glands are defective, the owners of those glands can still live close to normal lives on thyroid hormones or insulin. In the same way, people who inherit various ‘blue genes’ can also live close to normal lives by using modern scientific discoveries to correct their chemical imbalance.

It is interesting, and of note, that Meier selectivity chooses the pancreas and thyroid “GLANDS” in the Endocrine System (for which there are genuine medical treatments); while the BRAIN is a MAJOR ORGAN, like the LIVER, KIDNEYS, HEART, and LUNGS. Meier’s cunning choice for his “analogy” is a clever subterfuge. If a person’s pancreas or thyroid goes bad and ceases to function they can go on living (with proper treatment). If a person’s Liver, Kidneys, Heart, Lungs or Brain goes bad and ceases to function they are DEAD! Meier’s clever analogy is inconsistent since it is comparing “apples” (Glands) to “oranges” (Major Organs). But it was a “good try” any way - if you are trying to deceive people! By the way – WHAT ISNORMAL”?

Meier continues:

So if you need help, get it. If you are in a psychological prison, set yourself free. If your beloved family member or friend is in a blue gene prison, help set him free. If you are in a church that is behind the times when it comes to modern science and medications and theology, try your best to educate them. If your church criticizes all use of any brain medications, then pray about whether or not God would prefer that you move to a different church to be with practical Christians who don’t try to condemn or control you.

Meier’s is suggesting that today’s Christians must conform to “the times” that we live in:

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

WHO are we to believe? WHO are we to follow? Meier’s recommendation is IF your church is “behind the times” find another church that is conforming to the times” (i.e. the world) – a direct contradiction to the clear teaching of Scripture! Meier is recommending that Christians join a church that not only “keeps up” with MODERN SCIENCE and MODERN MEDICINE, but a church that is also “keeping up” with MODERN THEOLOGY also!

I wonder if Meier is talking about the kind of MODERN THEOLOGY which when confronted with the “SCIENTIFIC HYPOTHESIS” about Atheistic and Humanistic EVOLUTIONREJECTS the Scriptural record of Creation and embracesMODERN SCIENCE?”

1 Timothy 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

Meier continues:

Proverbs chapter 9 tells us that if we rebuke a wise person {P.C.}, that person {P.C.} will love us for doing so. God also tells us in Proverbs 9 that if certain people {P.C.} are ‘foolish’ – or paranoid in psychiatric terms – those foolish people {P.C.} will hate us for telling them the truth, so don’t waste time with them.

WHY won’t Meier QUOTE the Scriptures that he CITES?

Proverbs 9:7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

The Holy Bible does not use the words “person” or “people” in the verses (the good doctor is just being Politically Correct) - the Bible uses the masculine word “HE”.  Is Meier making sure that he “keeps up with the times”, since he doesn’t want to be “behind the times”?

Are ALL “people” who are “foolish” also “paranoid”? Are we to think and reason according to the Scriptures (i.e. God’s way), or are we to twist, rephrase, take out of context, reinterpret, and CHANGE God’s Holy words to FIT within a psychiatric context; or in psychiatric terms; or in a psychiatric world view? Meier is continually trying to make Biblical words, terms, principals, and precepts FIT within a psychiatric philosophical context.

Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Meier continues:

And if you want to be truly wise, truly your own best friend, {psychobabble} truly the most able person to love and be loved by your family and friends and yourself, and truly free from spiritual and emotional types of anxiety and depression, remember that you can’t do it on your own. You need a higher power, and the only true higher power is Jesus.

Which is it – “Jesus”; or “Drugs”; or “Therapy”? Is it possible, that IF we “truly” rely on the Lord Jesus Christ, and “truly” trust only in Him, that we could live overcoming lives (regardless of a so-called “chemical imbalance” in our brain) – just exactly like many of God’s children did for thousands of years without the benefit of mind altering Psychiatric Drugs or Psychiatric and/or Psychological Counseling?

ON PAGE 203 Meier states:

We are fearfully and wonderfully made, as David told us in Psalm 139. [Psalm 139:14]  God said in Psalm 139 that he was thinking about YOU, specifically, last night when you fell asleep. He was thinking about you this morning, specifically, when you woke up. He will think about you lovingly so many times today that you can’t even count them. So whom are you going to believe, your Heavenly Father or your earthly father or mother or cult leader or boss or mate?.

Once again - WHY does Meier continually go out of his way to alienate his “clients” from their spouses, parents, or friends?

Let us take a look at Psalm 139 and see IF what Meier has just “claimed” is TRUE.

9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

WHERE in the entire Psalm 139 does it ever say: “that he {God} was thinking about YOU”? It’s quite easy to CHANGE the word of God and ADD to it – especially IF you will not “quote” it! Psalm 139 has a whole lot to say about God’s relationship with David (and possibly all of His children).

Concerning his relationship with God - David proclaimed in Psalm 139 that God had “searched him, had known him, had compassest his path and his lying down, had beset him behind and before, and had laid thine hand upon him. David also proclaimed in Psalm 139 that God was acquainted with all of David’s ways, that there was not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether; that God knowest his downsitting and his uprising, and that God understandest his thought afar off. And David also proclaimed that no matter where he was God’s entire Creation that - Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me; but not once do the Holy Scriptures ever say that: “he {i.e. God} was thinking about YOU”! Do you think that Meier was reading into the Scriptures his ownprivate interpretation”?

2 Peter 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

Meier continues with his own personal take on Psalm 139:

God said in Psalm 139 that with one arm He is hugging you. {NOT in my Bible - The words “arm” and “hugging” are NOT in the entire Chapter! Psalms 139:10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. The “picture” that God is trying to convey in the verse would be as a FATHER leading His son BY THE HANDNOT with His “arm” around him! Can’t Meier ever get it right?} He is trying to convince you this very moment that you are loved and lovable and that He longs to spend eternity with you.” Again (Sigh) the words “love” and “lovable” can NOT be found in the entire Chapter! Does any of this mean anything to you – the reader?

Meier claims that:

He longs to spend eternity with you. He wants you to know that he created you for His enjoyment, so he could spend eternity with you, bringing you everlasting joy and finally a feeling of loving and being loved, just the way you are.

I can not find a verse in the entire Bible (let alone the Psalms) where God “longs to spend eternity with you” - or ME {???}. However, I long to spend eternity with HIM!

Again, just for the record, although God SAVED us just the way we WERE – HE DOES NOTaccept” us “just the way you are”! He is constantly molding us in order that we might be “conformed to the image of His Son” [Romans 8:29], because “they that are in the flesh can not please God” and “the carnal mind is enmity against God”.

If it weren’t for God’s Mercy & His Grace – none of His children would inherit eternal life! We are “loved” because of the Lord Jesus Christ – NOT because we are “lovable”!

Meier continues:

God said in Psalm 139 that with His other arm {the word is “HAND”!} He is using all sorts of secret ways to lead you in the right direction.

Just exactly WHERE does it say that in Psalm 139? The only place in the entire Chapter where the word “secret” is used is in Psalm 139:15.

Psalms 139:15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

WHAT does Psalm 139:15 have to do with Meier’s supposed claims? The answer is clearly NOTHING!

Meier continues:

How did this book get into your hands? We believe God led the authors to put it together and He Led you to read it, apply it, and teach it to others, and separate yourself from abusers, even well-intentioned abusers.

Is Meier claiming Inspiration for the book “Blue Genes”? How could God have “led the authors” to write a book that is so full of error, false teaching, and false doctrine?

Psalms 33:4 For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.

Is Almighty God the author of confusion?

1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Please notice that Meier is NOT urging people to “search the Scriptures” for the answers to “the issues of life”, instead he is urging people to “readhis book, and “apply it, and teach it to others”! Talk about pride; talk about audacity; talk about arrogance! I have demonstrated (from the Holy Bible) over and over again where many of Meier’s “teachings” are not just mistaken or in error, but they are instead perverse distortions of the “Scripture of truth” and are found to be FALSE TEACHINGS and FALSE DOCTRINES.

2 Timothy 2:1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

The “things” that Paul is speaking of in 2Timothy 2:2 are the “words of God” (Scripture) – NOT the “words of men”!

Meier continues on in the same philosophical vein:

Quit putting your self-concept in someone else’s control. Decide right now to become your best friend, {Psychobabble} never again saying anything negative to yourself that you would not say to your best friend if he or she made the same mistake. In fact, write today’s date in the back of this book with a written pledge to yourself that you will become your own best friend from today forward {Psychobabble}. And start a personal relationship with Jesus, your creator, if you haven’t already.

It’s always “mistakes” – NOT SIN! Again, the psychological concept of “self-love” is foreign to the teachings of the Holy Scriptures. I wonder if the foregoing is some of the “modern (“up to date”) theology” that Meier was referring to earlier. And what about Meier’s statement: “start a personal relationship with Jesus, your creator, if you haven’t already.HOW does one go about STARTINGa personal relationship with Jesus”? We do NOTSTART” anything. We must first BELIEVE on the Lord Jesus Christ! And then we must RECEIVE Him as our SAVIOURNOT: “START a personal relationship with Him” as if He is like a girlfriend or boyfriend! We can NOT have a “personal relationship” with the LORD Jesus Christ unless we first “Believe” & “Receive” – it is impossible! And please notice: Meier always refers to the LORD JESUS CHRIST as simply “Jesus” – NEVER LORD! I wonder - which “Jesus” Meier is referring to?

2 Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4 For if he that cometh preacheth
another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

ON PAGES 203-204 Meier continues:

Trust Him to come into your life and use the blood he shed on the cross two thousand years ago to wash away all your true guilt and true shame.”

This is “ANOTHER GOSPEL” spoken of in 2Corinthians 11:3-4 and again in Galatians 1:6-9!

Galatians 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

The Lord Jesus Christ suffered and died and shed His blood to pay for “the SINS of the whole world” (including my sins) [1John 2:2]. His precious blood has washed all my SINS away – NOT my “true guilt” and “true shame”! Meier is, once again, indulging in private interpretation; miss-interpretation; false application; and twisting the precepts and principals of the Holy words of God to suit his own purposes. And in addition he now has CHANGED “the GOSPEL of the Grace of God” [Acts 20:24] into psychological mumbo jumbo in order to justify his existence as a “Christian” Psychiatrist and Counselor.

1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Acts 20:24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

Meier continues:

He died and rose again and lives in heaven, building you a personal Heavenly Condo” – so He can enjoy you forever and so other believers in Him can enjoy you forever.

According to Meier’s “gospel”: It’s all about YOU; it’s all about ME; it’s all about US; and it’s called HUMANISM! It’s LEAVEN, FALSE TEACHING, FALSE DOCTRINE, and “SCIENCE FALSELY SO-CALLED”! In other words it’s pure unadulterated HERESY – i.e. “PSYCHOHERESY”!

Meier proceeds to actually quote some words from a corrupt modern version to support his psychiatric/psychological point of view - but from a corrupt modern translation (of course).

What about your sins? Jesus told the self-righteous legalists {Pharisees} who wanted to kill a woman caught in adultery by throwing stones at her, ‘whoever of you has never committed a sin, you should throw the first stone at her.’

Actually the Holy Bible puts it differently and much more succinct:

John 8:7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

The Lord would have never said: “whoever of you has never committed a sin”, since He knew that was impossible. However, under the Mosaic Law, a man could be “without sin” if he followed the Law and made the proper sacrifices, when it was required, for any sins he may have committed. And (more to the point) the Pharisees brought the woman to the Lord not so much because they wanted to “kill” her, but because they wanted to “tempt” Him, “that they might accuse Him.

John 8:6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

Meier missed the point again. He then continues with his discourse:

Everybody there then dropped their stones, since they had all sinned. Then Jesus said lovingly to the adulteress ‘If none of them condemn you, then I don’t either, go home and quit committing that sin.’

Again, Meier’s account is not according to the Holy Bible.

John 8:9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

Again, Meier has ADDED his privatespin” to the Scriptural record. The word “lovingly” does not appear in the Bible. Meier is seeing something that is not there, and INSERTING his Humanistic world view into the Scriptural account.

The Lord Jesus Christ certainly did NOTlovingly” speak to her (like Humanists would today). If anything He was far more likely to have been stern with her when he admonished her to “go, and sin no more”! And He certainly did not leave the door open for her to commit other sins by saying “go home and quit committing that sin” - ONLY!

Meier continues:

Admit to God right now some of your specific sins. Don’t worry, you can’t surprise Him. {DUH!} He knows more about them than you do. {Double DUH!} You may know what sin you committed, but He knows what particular genetic factors and childhood factors made you more prone to commit that sin, and He even knows what group of unconscious motives influenced you.”

Does Meier supply any Scripture to support his assertion? Of course not! And IF there are “genetic factors” or “childhood factors” or “unconscious motives” that make us “more prone to commit that sin” will a Righteous and Just God EXCUSEthat sin” because of those “factors”? I trow not!

1 John 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

Regardless of “genetic factors”; “childhood factors”; or “unconscious motives”!

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Rest assured, regardless of what Meier and his colleagues (or the rest of his psychiatric and psychological “brethren”) may claim or assert, God’s Holy words will come to pass - whether Meier agrees with them or not!

Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

ON PAGE 204 under “A NOTE TO ATHEISTS”

Meier continues with his assertions and claims:

If you are an atheist and reading this book, know that we empathize with you. {WHY?} It is possible your beliefs stem from “father issues”. {Psychobabble} If your father was gone all the time or too busy for you, your brain may have tricked you into thinking there is no heavenly Father either. To believe there is no creative God, while seeing His creation all around you, takes a lot more faith than it does to believe in a creative God. Or perhaps your father was such a jerk that you WISH he never existed, so you imagine God doesn’t exist.”

This is infantile reasoning – imagine a computer having the ability (on its own) to “trick you” into “thinking” anything! And just because someone believes in a “creative God” (i.e. aDeist”) does not make them a child of God. [James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.]

On the other hand, “perhaps” it is “possible” that Meier has no idea as to what he is talking about and just “imagines” that he understands the underlying motives as to why someone is an atheist. IF I were inclined to believe in Psychiatry and Psychology I would almost think that Meier is obsessed with hatred for his parents (especially his father) and is suffering from a “father complex”; but since all of that kind of thinking is pure nonsense, I will instead assume that Meier has bought into the modern Humanistic Philosophy concerning parents and is just regurgitating the “psychobabble” that he has learned along the way.

Meier continues with his “imaginary” speculations:

Think about it. Are you going to deny and repress your rage toward your earthly father and transfer that rage to God instead? Then you could continue to idealize your earthly father and become prejudiced against your Heavenly Father, deciding there isn’t any God anyway. Or you can believe what God said about you in Psalm 139.

Notice the Psychiatric/Psychological “catch words”: “deny”, “repress”, “transfer”, and “idealize”; what have these things to do with “the Scripture of Truth”? The further along we get into Meier’s book, the further he descends into Heresy! Just for the record – An atheist has NO “HEAVENLY FATHER”! The Lord Jesus Christ said to the Pharisees (who professed that God was their “Father”) that God was NOT their Father, so HOW could He possibly be a “Heavenly Father” to an atheist who denies the very existence of Almighty God? How is it that Meier can not get the simplest of Scriptural precepts’ and principals’ right?

John 8:41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

Our Heavenly Father has saved those of us who have believed in & on His Son, and who have received Him, and who are trusting in His sacrifice upon Calvary on our behalf. We are the children of God because of His Life; and His death; and His shed blood. God is our Heavenly Father because of the “adoption”, not because of anything that we have done in the flesh, but because we believed the record that God has given us [1John 5:10-11]:

Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

I repeat: God is NOT the “Heavenly Father” of any atheist or of anyone else who has chosen to not believe “the record” that God has given of His Son; and to think, or believe, or to teach otherwise is Heresy! And the Lord Jesus Christ makes this abundantly clear in the Gospel of John [John 8:12-44; 10:25-30; & 17:6-23].

ON PAGES 204-205 Meier continues:

Your parents and society may have taught you that you have to earn their love and acceptance. God says His love is unconditional. {WHERE in the Scriptures does God say that – Chapter & Verse?} In Ephesians 2:8-9, God tells us the only way to get to heaven is to have faith in what Jesus did, not in anything you ever did or didn’t do.

WHAT did the Lord Jesus Christ do - WHY doesn’t Meier “spell it out” for us? And WHY (over and over again) won’t he quote the Scriptures?

1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

John 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Actually, the Holy Bible says a lot more than Meier asserts; and it clearly spells eternal salvation out in detail – something that Meier fails to do (over and over again). The Bible clearly testifies that in order to get “saved” a person must believe in/on the Lord Jesus Christ and they must receive Him as their personal Saviour. The devils also believe and tremble [James 2:19] but it doesn’t do them any good!

ON PAGE 205 Meier continues:

Heaven is a gift. A relationship with your creator is a gift. Eternal life is a gift. God says in that passage that if you tried to be good enough to get to Heaven, you would just add to the sine of pride to your existing list, and brag about how good you are, like so many religious leaders do today.

Meier claims that “Heaven is a gift. Meier is ADDING to the word of God. In point of fact: “eternal life” is “the gift of God” - “through Jesus Christ our Lord” [Romans 6:23]. God hasn’t given us the “gift” of “Heaven”, he has given those of us who have believed and received Him: “the gift of eternal life” - there is a difference you know. Eternal life is a gift.” – True, but Meier neglects to mention HOW we get that “gift” – i.e. “through Jesus Christ our Lord”. Meier omitted or skipped over God’s Grace; i.e. the operational factor, whereby we obtain eternal life.

Meier says that “A relationship with your creator is a gift”. Whether this is true or not is hard to ascertain since the words “relation” and “relationship” are not in the Holy Bible. But there is one thing that I do know - my “relationship” (i.e. my “standing”) with Almighty God is dependent upon The Lord Jesus Christ’s “FINISHED WORK” on Calvary; and now that I am saved my “personal relationship” (i.e. my “walk”) with my “Heavenly Father” is dependant upon knowing and obeying His Holy words as found in the Holy Bible, and following the leading of the Holy Spirit in my life.

Meier also claimed that:

Your forgiveness and your value as a human being is a gift.”

Meier is ADDING to God’s words – again. WHERE in the Scriptures does it say that “your value as a human being is a gift”?

We now come to a most revealing confession on the part of Paul Meier, “Christian” Psychiatrist:

. . . . . At the time of this publication, {2005} I will be a 60 year old psychiatrist with a seminary degree, who has been reading his Bible since he was 10, and I still have doubts sometimes because of my strict German father. So don’t feel so bad if you do too.

I have suspected all along that Paul Meier has harbored a “grudge” against his “strict German father” for far too many years; and instead of forgiving his father for any real or imagined wrongs that his father may have done to him (and forgetting them), he blames his father for sins in his own life 40 years AFTER becoming an adult! WHY should the way that Paul Meier’s was treated as a child by his father have any bearing on how Paul Meier’s believes today (at 60 years old)? There must come a time in each of our lives when we must take personal responsibility of our own short comings, faults, and sins; and stop blaming our parents for what we do or the way we are!

Paul Meier was 60 years old at the time of the publication of the book “Blue Genes”, and he was still blaming his “strict German father” for his own shortcomings, faults, sins, and UNBELIEF in God and in God’s Holy word. And on top of that, he was still making EXCUSES for his conduct and encouraging others to do the same, despite the Scriptural admonition and warning: “for whatsoever is not of faith is sin” [Romans 14:23]! What more can I say, except to make an observation: READING the “Bible” for 50 years, and BELIEVING what is written in the Bible are two different things – as Paul Meier has demonstrated over and over again in his book “Blue Genes”!

Psychiatry and Psychology have provided Meier with a lifetime of excuses and reasons not to take personal responsibility; not to forgive (and forget); and not to grow up and become his own man. According to Meier’s confession (“I still have doubts”) - it’s his father’s fault, NOT Meier’s!

Meier’s “doubts” couldn’t possibly be a failure on Meier’s part; his lack of faith and failure to trust God and His Holy word can’t possibly be his own responsibility, oh no – instead, like a spoiled child, Meier blames his unbelief on his “strict German father”. This is the fundamental maxim of Psychiatry & Psychology: always blame others and never take personal responsibility!

Meier states that he is a “Christian” Psychiatrist with a “Seminary Degree” (“who has been reading his Bible since he was ten years old”). However, he is proof positive that genuine spiritual discernment, understanding, and wisdom can not be attained through “schooling”; or through a college, seminary, or medical degree; or length of time spent just “reading” the Bible; or any other carnal, worldly, so-called “Christian” means. “Knowledge puffeth up” [1Corinthians 8:1], but true genuine spiritual discernment, understanding, and wisdom come only from God; and God gives these things to whom he will; that is - only to those who truly love His word and are in awe of it. [Psalms 119:140, 161].

Psalms 119:130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

1 Corinthians 1:26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

1 Corinthians 2:6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are
freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

You see, “spiritual things” (i.e. genuine spiritual knowledge, discernment, understanding and wisdom) never have been about “schooling” or “degrees” (i.e. Formal Education). They never have been about “worldly knowledge” or “worldly wisdom” (i.e. Philosophy - Psychiatry & Psychology). This whole issue never has been about our “intellect” or “abilities” (i.e. how smart or talented we are). These are the “things” that the world desires, looks up to, and emulates. True spiritual knowledge, discernment, understanding, and wisdom have always been dependent on a person having the right heart condition and the right spirit - so that in the end God gets all of the glory.

Psalms 56:10 In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word.

Isaiah 66:1 Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
2 For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

Ezekiel 3:10 Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, all my words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart, and hear with thine ears.

Psalms 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

ON PAGE 205 Meier continues with his private interpretations and wresting of the Scriptures:

John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin and grew up with Jesus and saw Jesus perform miracles, like withered hands growing back.

Just to keep the Biblical record straight: No where’s in the Holy Bible (i.e. the King James Bible) does it ever say that John the Baptist “grew up with Jesus” or that he (John) ever “saw Jesus perform miracles”. This is pure speculation and conjecture on Meier’s part, or to be more accurate – Meier is ADDING to God’s Holy words (once again) and in the face of God’s multiple warnings NOT to ADD to His words [Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:5-6;  Revelation 22:18 -19]

WHY would John the Baptist have said “I knew Him not” – IF he (John) “grew up with Jesus”?

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to
Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

With all of the “reading” of the Bible that Meier supposedly has done, couldn’t he remember a simple fact such as this? John testified about the Lord Jesus Christ “I knew him not”; HOW could he have possibly said this IF he (John) “grew up with Jesus”???

And WHY did John the Baptist (in a moment of weakness and doubt) send his disciples to enquire of the Lord as to whether He was The One “that should come” [“Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?”] - IF he (John) “saw Jesus perform miracles”? And WHY did the Lord Jesus Christ tell John’s disciples to testify to John about His miracles “tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.IF he (John) “saw Jesus perform miracles” before?

Luke 7:19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

When the disciples reported back to John the Baptist they testified to what they saw and heardNOT to what John might have seen. How is it, that a Seminary trained “Christian” Psychiatrist can not discern or understand the simplest facts from the Bible? Like I have said before: Can Paul Meier ever get it right?

Meier continues:

But when John the Baptist was preparing to be killed for Jesus, he had his doubts too. He sent a letter to his cousin, Jesus, from prison asking Jesus to reassure him that Jesus really is the promised Messiah.

FACT: John was killed because he dared to criticize the marriage of King Herod to Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife! Matthew 14:3 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. 14:4 For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. See Matthew 14:3-12 for the full details.

FACT: No where’s in any Gospel account does John the Baptist send “a letter to his cousin, Jesus”. The Scriptural record clearly states that John sent two of his disciples to enquire of the Lord – NOTa letter”! WHY CHANGE the Gospel account? WHY ADD to the Holy words of God?

ON PAGES 205-206 Meier continues with his “NOTES TO ATHEISTS”:

Talk to the Heavenly Father, and to His Son Jesus right now. Ask them to forgive you for your sins – all your sins, past, present, and future. and if you are so mad at your dad that you are still an atheist {it’s still the father’s “fault”!} and can’t quite get yourself to do this yet, then please say this very safe prayer:

Paul Meier’s “SAFE PRAYER” for Atheists follows:

God, if there is one, please make yourself known to me. I don’t really think you are there. I think this is all I will experience. If you do exist, I’m, not sure if I would like you or hate you for all the pain you have allowed in my life. But if you do truly exist, then I do want to know you, even though I am afraid to do this because of past hurts. Please help me. I ask you to make yourself known to me somehow. I will be waiting for you, just in case you really do exist. Amen.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Meier’s aforementioned “safe prayer” is not only senseless, meaningless, ineffectual, and totally worthless; it is also dishonorable, contemptible, and blasphemous! Did you get that “MUST”? MUST does NOT mean MAYBE except for psychiatrists, psychologists, and Humanists!

HOW is it possible that this man taught at Dallas Theological Seminary (the most “prestigious” Fundamentalist Seminary in America) for 12 years? Doctor Paul Meier (and the many other schooled and credentialed “Christian” doctors and educators that I have read or met in my lifetime) is the reason why I am not persuaded, impressed, or intimidated by modern day “Christian” Schooling & Education; or “Christian” Educators & Commentators; or “Christian” Psychiatrists, Psychologists, & Counselors. Just because they have matriculated and finished a course of studies and have received a “degree” does not mean that they believe in sound Scriptural precepts and principals (i.e. doctrine), or that they possess genuine spiritual discernment, understanding, and wisdom.

According to the Holy Bible: IF a person desires to come to God, before they do anything else (including a “safe prayer”) they FIRST “must believe that he is”! You can NOT approach Almighty God with “an evil heart of UNBELIEF” [Hebrews 3:12] and REQUEST (or demand) that He accept you on your own terms!

John 4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him
must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Meier’s “safe prayer” is nothing less than Humanistic drivel (Psychoheresy) The perverse idea that a Holy God would answer a FAITHLESS prayer which includes the following statements - “God, if there is one”; “I don’t really think you are there”; “if you do truly exist”; “just in case you really do exist” is LUDICROUS!

God does NOT make Himself known to people “SOMEHOW” – “FAITH cometh by HEARING, and HEARING by THE WORD OF GOD”, NOT some unknown etherealsomehow”!

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

According to the Holy Scriptures - BELIEF IS ESSENTIAL FOR SALVATION! So HOW can an atheist come to God when he DOES NOT BELIEVE? It is impossible; and yet we have the spectacle of a Seminary trained “Christian” Psychiatrist recommending (to atheists) to go ahead and TRY ANYWAY - in the face of the clear Scriptural teaching that God will not honor such a prayer.

John 9:31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

In the aforementioned verse of Scripture a simple uneducated blind man (whom the Lord healed) admonishes and reproves the educated religious leaders (Pharisees) of his day for not discerning and understanding one of the simplest of God’s precepts. And here we have Doctor Paul Meier repeating the same error (and sin) of those blind Pharisees of long ago!

I have been a Christian for over 50 years. In all of those years, attending various churches (Brethren churches, Independent Bible churches, Pentecostal churches, Southern & Independent Baptist churches) I do not believe that I have heard (or read) a more ambiguous, misleading, or perverse statement coming from a so-called “Evangelical” or “Fundamentalist” Christian leader. The Holy Scriptures are crystal clear in this matter:

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

If this pitifulsafe prayer” is the result of 20 years (or more) of “formal schooling” (Elementary, Middle, High School, College, Seminary, and Medical School) then I thank Almighty God for sparing me from such a corrupting influence! In Meier’s “safe prayer” an atheist refers to himself 13 times in a short paragraph (it’s all about ME!), and then confesses that he doubts the existence of God four (4) times (within the paragraph); while at the same time blaming God for “all the pain you have allowed in my life” and for “past hurts”. And to top the whole blasphemous mess off he (the atheist) REQUESTS (or demands) that God “make yourself known to me somehow” (by ANY means?)!

HOW does Meier propose that an atheist get to know God - Through DREAMS, or VISIONS, or MIRACLES, or SIGNS, or SCHOOLING & EDUCATION, or “CHRISTIAN” PSYCHIATRISTS & PSYCHOLOGISTS? Just how does Almighty God reveal Himself to men and women in this “age”? What saith the Scriptures?

Psalms 33:4 For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.

John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

1 Peter 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

2 Timothy 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

1 Thessalonians 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

Ephesians 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

There are a whole lot more verses, but why go on? Meier’s “safe prayer” reveals all that is WRONG in MIXING Humanistic Psychiatric & Psychological Philosophy with “the Scripture of truth”. The end result being LEAVEN and a DEPENDENCE on MYTHS & FABLES, promulgated by mere men (psychiatrists & psychologists) posing as professional “Christian” Counselors and Doctors, but who are in reality spreading CONFUSION, DISTRUST, DIVISION, and UNBELIEF!

2 Corinthians 2:17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

Romans 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

I have nearly reached the end of the book “Blue Genes”; however, before I close this part of my review of the book I will quote some of Paul Meier’s parting advice to his readers.

FROM: FINAL ADVICE FOR FAMILIES WITH LOVED ONES DEALING WITH BLUE GENES

ON PAGES 206-207 Meier states:

. . . . . If your loved one has OCD, dysthymia, recurrent major depression, ADHD, bipolar illness, post abortion syndrome, post partum depression, chronic fatigue, or psychosis of any kind, insist on him or her getting quality professional help. Your loved one is a Mercedes, not an old beat-up jalopy. You wouldn’t take a new Mercedes that had a mechanical breakdown to a ninth-grade shop student to fix, would you? For the best results, take him to a physician who is experienced and qualified to deal with the problems listed above. {With no distinctions between the lost or saved?}

Once again Meier reverts to an unworkableanalogy” to convince his readers to accept his speculations, opinions, and assertions. Men and women are living breathing spiritual beings in a physical body and can not be compared to a mechanical (entirely physical) entity! We have as much in common with a car as a dog has with a bicycle. The analogies that Meier so cleverly uses to prove his hypothesis are invalid and unsupportable because (to use a proper analogy) he is comparing apples to oranges.

We know WHO the “physician who is experienced and qualified to deal with the problems listed above” is (i.e. Meier and his Psychiatric & Psychological Colleagues and Cohorts); but WHO is the “ninth-grade shop student” that he alludes to? IF he (and all “experienced” psychiatrists & psychologists) is the “qualified physician”, WHAT does that make all of the rest of us (especially those of us who are genuine Bible believers)?

Do you see how it is done? Invent imaginary psychosis, diseases, and disorders from the “issues of life” common to all men (and women), and then declare that they (the psychiatrists & psychologists) are the only ones “qualified” to “cure” the so-called psychosis, diseases, and disorders. And what constitutes the “cure”? - A lifetime dependence on “therapy” and “drugs” dispensed by the “experiencedpsychiatrists or psychologists, of course! When something makes no sense – look for the money {$$$}!

Meier continues with his final advice:

Develop a good spiritual life with God and with your loved one. Loving and being loved, and having a clear conscience, will do more good than anything else spiritually to restore your soul and maximize the rebuilding of the necessary brain chemicals needed to function well.

HOW does someone (who is unsaved) go about developing a good spiritual life with God” - IF THEY ARE LOST? HOW does someone (who is saved) go about developing a good spiritual life with God” - especially when Meier neglects to mention the Holy word of God or the leading of the Holy Spirit?

Meier continues:

. . . . . Get help for yourself. Read books like this one, or, “Love Is A Choice”, or “”Unbreakable Bonds”. These are books that tell you how to have a full life regardless of circumstances. Become your own best friend. Build a support group for you and your friend or relative with ‘blue genes’. Make it similar to a Board of Directors that oversees a person’s growth and mental health. Apply peer pressure to your loved one when he needs to quit, and welcome him home with open arms after he finishes rehab.

Meier’s “Final Advice” is pure psychobabble with just a dab of Scripture to make it palatable to ignorant Christians. In giving his “Final Advice”, Meier neglected to tell his readers to “TRUST in God”; to “FEAR God”; to “LOVE God”; to “OBEY God”; and to “SERVE Him in TRUTH with all your heart”!

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Ecclesiastes 12:10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Deuteronomy 10:12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,

1 Samuel 12:23 Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:
24 Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.

Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do
: and the God of peace shall be with you.

1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

Meier never once pointed to the Holy Bible (“the Scripture of truth”) for the answers to “the issues of life”:

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

He never encouraged his readers to “search the Scriptures”:

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Meier never invites people (specifically Christians) to “study . . . the word of truth”:

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

And he never advocates reliance on God’s words. – Instead he encourages families and friends to look to men’s words (especially his own books) for all the answers to all of their misfortunes, “problems”, and “pain”.

Romans 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

2 Timothy 3:14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Paul Meier’s “Final Advice” to his readers is neither spiritual nor Scriptural; instead his final recommendations are self-serving, carnal, deceptive, misleading, and destructive to any Christian’s walk with the Lord.

You can not remove the CAUSE (our sinful nature) by treating the SYMPTONS (our sins); or by pretending that the ROOT and CAUSES are something (like “mental illness”, “mental disease”, or “mental disorders”) other than what the Holy Scriptures have already declared them to be.

After thoroughly reviewing and examining the book “Blue Genes” in the light of God’s Holy word, I can testify that the book is HUMANISTIC LEAVEN & FALSE TEACHING; which can only lead to FALSE DOCTRINE & HERESY! Of a truth, this is surely “PSYCHOHERESY” – Let the reader BEWARE!

The second part of this review of the book “Blue Genes” covers the short case histories of 25 psychiatric patients (i.e. “clients”) and their “diagnosis” and “treatment” by Paul Meier, M.D.; or Todd Clements, M.D.; or Jean-Luc Bertrand, D.M.D.; or David Mandt, M.A. Most of the patients were treated at the Meier Clinics, founded by Paul Meier (a well known “Christian” psychiatrist).

PART II – 25 “CASES”

INDIVIDUAL CASES SITED IN BOOK: (All names = “Aliases”)

1.     PAGES 5-7 & 14-15 – CHARLES RAUSCH {College Student}

Meier’s Description:Charles was a very sad student at Trinity Seminary in Chicago. He had no sense of humor, was married to a nurse, and had three (3) children, and was very poor. Meier’s checked his MMPI (the main psychological personality test given around the world) and he came out in the ninety-ninth percentile for depression and masochism.”

Meier’s Comments: “After seeing Charles weekly for counseling, I discovered Charles had an extensive family history of depression, with many relatives on both sides of the family tree who suffered from it. So I persuaded Charles to take an antidepressant for his inherited “blue genes”, in his case, chronic dysthymia.”

Meier’s Solution: Drugs Continual Medication and Counseling = Happily Ever After

My Comments: While working at Trinity Seminary teaching counseling to future pastors, Meier’s tried to “help” Charles after noticing his sad demeanor. After counseling with Charles weekly for several weeks Meier’s determined that Charles had “an extensive family history of depression” on both sides of Charles’s family. How could Meier’s determine whether anyone else in Charles’s family had depression just by weekly counseling sessions (of perhaps an hour per week?) with Charles only, without interviewing each and every member of his family? Because a person is sad (or poor), does that mean he has to take drugs for the rest of his life?

Ecclesiastes 7:3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

2.   PAGES 7-9 – MARY MULLENS {46 year old Homemaker – affluent}

Meier’s Description: Mary was a 46 year old homemaker who had lifelong depression and who, since her teen years, had been treated by family doctors with a wide variety of psychiatric medications.

Meier’s Comments: Mary – “came to the Meier Day Program in the Dallas area, hoping to receive just the right combination of medications to finally rid her of her depression. But the more her counselors got to know Mary, through seven hours a day of group, educational and individual counseling, the clearer it was that her problem was not genetic. Her father was a chauvinistic, critical, domineering man. Her mother was passive. Mary, like 85 per cent of human beings, {according to whom?} had married someone very much like her parent of the opposite sex - a critical, controlling attorney Throughout her treatment, Mary wept often, forgave her parents and others, reprogrammed her brain, and learned to stand up to the control of her father and husband” “. . . . . . Her husband regretted the day he brought Mary to the Clinic.”

Meier’s Solution: Counseling. After three (3) weeks “treatment”: Mary refused to live with her husband until he gotextensive help” and “changed his ways”! = Happily Ever After

My Comments: How did Meier know that Mary’s mother is passive? How did he know her father was “chauvinistic, critical and domineering? And that her husband was the same as her father, plus controlling”? Did Mary tell him so? How did he arrive at such a conclusion? Did he interview her mother, father or husband at all? Three weeks of intensive “treatment” for Mary at  hundreds of dollars a day, plus several more months of “counseling” add up to lots of $$$$$ for the Meier’s Clinics! And in the end – it’s her mother’s faultit’s her father’s fault and - of course it’s her husbands fault; and he has to change his ways or she won’t live with him!

            Colossians 3:18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

      Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

3.     PAGES 11-12 – TWO MALE COLLEGE STUDENTS – {affluent}

Meier’s Description: Both students (attending Dallas Theological Seminary) became psychotic around the same time.

Meier’s Comments: “They both had inherited schizophrenia, a genetic disorder that affects 0ne percent of the population with symptoms beginning in the late teens or early 20’s. . . . . One student continued on the medications and fully recovered. The other student grew up in a legalistic church where medications that affected the brain were considered sinful. That student never recovered and continues to be delusional and nonfunctional in society today. His pastor blamed his lack of faith. Shouldn’t the blame instead be placed on a pastor who refused to let God work through medication to restore a young man’s life?”

Meier’s Solution:

Student #1 - Drugs - Treatment and Continual Medication =Happily Ever After

Student #2 - No Medications – Delusional/Non-functional = Failure

My Comments: How can Meier be so sure that the second student would have been permanently cured – had he taken medication? There is no way that he could know what the outcome would have been had the student gone on medications.

Between pages 10 through 13 Meier repeatedly criticizes: legalistic believers”; “ignorant people”; “cultural prejudices”; “Christian legalists”; “acting out of ignorance;legalistic church”; etc. He states on page 11: Usually people who criticize others the most for taking medicines for the brain are people who have the most brain deficiencies themselves. For someone with a PhD in Psychiatry, Meier deals with those people who may disagree with him in rather a childish and sophomoric manner, painting all of them with a broad brush – while not dealing with any of their objections.

4.     PAGES 12-13 – FEMALE ISRAELI SOCIAL WORKER – {affluent}

Meier’s Description: Israeli woman traveled to the U.S.A. to the Meier Clinics for treatment of a “lifelong severe obsessive compulsive disorder.

Meier’s Comments: “She suffered from lifelong, severe obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), which drove her to the point of daily suicidal urges. Still she loved God and was very faithful in serving Him. She had an underlying genetic disorder involving serotonin. A serotonin antidepressant along with a proper diet resolved her obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors allowing her to experience joy and peace for the first time in her life.” Upon returning to Israel, her synagogue convinced her “that it was wrong to take medications for the brain” . . . . & “psychiatric problems should totally rely on faith and prayer. “So she stopped her medications and within a few weeks the obsessive thoughts, compulsive behaviors and daily suicidal urges returned. The synagogue leaders blamed the relapse on her lack of faith. This filled her with remorse and guilt. To escape the pain, she committed suicide by hanging herself.”

Meier’s Solution: Drugs  - Medication & Proper Diet – Failure to follow = {SUICIDE}

My Comments: How could Meier possibly “know” what he is claiming to know? Meier’s easy assumptions:She loved God”; “she was faithfully serving Him”; “she had an underlying genetic disorder”; “she experienced joy and peace for the first time in her life”; “she was filled with remorse and guilt”; “and to escape the pain, she hung herself. How could Meier “know” all of these things to be true after only treating this woman for such a short time? People are far more complex than these simplistic assertions and assumptions.

Psalms 139:14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

5. PAGES 13-14 – FEMALE COLLEGE GRADUATE – {affluent}

Meier’s Description: A young college graduate “who had been both schizophrenic and bipolar all of her life and still somehow managed to get through school.

Meier’s Comments: “All her life, she had paranoid delusions and heard audible voices saying negative things to her. . . . . . She was suicidal almost every day of her life and learned to live in this horrible pain. Dr. Meier and his staff went out of their way to show her respect and love, and even gave her appropriate hugs for her breakthrough.”

Meier’s Solution: Drugs - Continual Medication. =
