WHAT IS GOD’S WORD

Lesson No. 7

(WHICH BIBLE?)

We have arrived! At last we can get to the question: Which Bible?

In the last 100 years nearly 100 English translations of the Bible have hit the ‘market’. But it has only been in the last 20 years that (for the first time since 1611) these “NEW” translations have started making serious inroads (in the so-called Fundamental -Evangelical Christian community) into the acceptance and popularity of the AV-KJB.

Within the modern “Christian” world you can find a veritable menagerie of bibles. What with the modernists pushing for the RSV, NEB or their “new” updates. The Southern Baptists pressing for the TEV, (Today’s English Version formerly known as - Good News for Modern man = Bad News for Sinners!). Billy Graham’s endorsement and recommendation of the Living bible. The Cambellites urging the use of the Amplified bible. The Jehovah’s Witnesses vigorously pushing the New World Translation. The Pentecostals, Charismatics and Evangelicals pressing for the NIV. The Catholic Church urging the use of their bibles, the “New” Jerusalem or “New” American Versions etc. And the majority of the so-called Fundamentalists strongly recommending the NASV (for the “serious” Bible student), or the “New” Schofield, or the New KJV.  It’s a miracle that we still can buy an AV-KJB! The fact is it’s getting harder and harder to find an AV-KJB, especially a quality bound one, without references or notes.

Today, just like in the 1st and 2nd centuries, any heretic, modernist, feminist, Russelite, Cambellite, Protestant, Pentecostal, Charismatic, Fundamentalist, Catholic, Jew, Communist, etc., etc., can find a ‘bible’ to suit his or her needs, bias’s, opinions and prejudices. Here are just a few examples from a Christian College textbook used in the training of “Ministers” – General Biblical Introduction (GBI) –1944.

GBI - Pg. 32, Item 84. The Revised Version.According to modern English, the Revised Version is usually more accurate than the Authorized, but here is an exception. The placing of the verb “is” in the translation, “Every Scripture inspired of God is also profitable,” is a strange, unaccountable, and serious blunder. It cannot be defended.” (Why would anyone even want to try todefend” such a “serious blunder”?)

GBI – Pg. 34, Item 86. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:19-21). “In the Revised Version the important change is from holy men of God spake” to “men spake from God.” “This change probably came from a slip in the eye of the copyist, mistaking the Greek words for “holy” and “from”, the two being somewhat alike in the old uncial type. Although the change is not based upon the very best manuscript authority, yet it emphasizes an important Scriptural truth.”

What about the verses that teach that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 1Corinthians 5:6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole  lump?  Galatians 5:9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. If we had the time (and the space) we could examine GBI-Pg. 372, Item 673; GBI-Pgs. 377-379, Item 674 (10) and Item 675; or GBI-Pgs. 382-384, Items 680-682. Each Item demonstrates the same peculiar ‘mind set’ of the scholars and the critics, (Christian’s included). This book (GBI) was written by a “Conservative” Christian scholar and used in many “Fundamentalist” schools and ‘bible’ colleges as a ‘text book’! And there are many more that are even worse! (For example: The Ancestry of Our English Bible by Ira M. Price; The Books and the Parchments by F. F. Bruce). What a sad ‘commentary’ on the state of academic and intellectual Christianity!

These men and their ‘works’ are nothing like those in the Philadelphia church:

Revelation 3:7  And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

As a matter of fact these men and their works are in the tradition of the apostate Laodicean church: Revelation 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

The days that we are living in are apostate times, be careful don’t be Lukewarm! Are you hot? Are you cold? God would have us either hot or cold. As Brother Dusty Rhoades used to say: “If you ain’t hot or cold then what are you?LUKEWARM!

It’s a sad state of affairs and shameful as to how many “Christian” books I’ve read that say: “The KJV unfortunately obscures this passage”; or “a better reading would be”; or “older and better manuscripts say”. How many honest and sincere pastors and preachers and evangelists have underestimated The Book? Only God Knows!

Under the guise of “updating ‘archaic’ words in the KJV”, or “because we now have so many more manuscripts and much older manuscripts”, or “we now have a more accurate knowledge of the original”, the ‘scholars’ are trying to persuade Bible believers to trade in their Holy Bible for “more trustworthy bibles”.

Just remember:

#1. The AV-KJB always gives the Lord Jesus Christ the preeminence.

#2. The AV-KJB always elevates the word of God.

Which is more than can be said for Phillips, Weymouth, Berkeley, the RV, the RSV, the NWT, the Jerusalem, the NEB, the ‘old’ ASV, the ‘new’ ASV, the NIV or any other of the 100 plus English translations that are out there.

It’s time to make some comparisons. The ‘scholars’ say the AV-KJB is hard to understand, archaic, not clear, etc. Oh really! Let’s compare the Revised Standard Version (RSV) and the New World Translation (Jehovah’s Witnesses bible - NWT) with God’s Holy word (AV-KJB) shall we?

RSV: Numbers 13:33 There we saw the Nephilim (the Anakites come from the Nephilim); and to ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.

NWT: Numbers 13:33 And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who are from the Nephilim; so that we became in our own eyes like grasshoppers, and the same way we became in their eyes.

AV-KJB: Numbers 13:33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

RSV: Deuteronomy 22:9 You shall not sow your vineyard with a second kind of seed, or the whole yield will have to be forfeited, both the crop that you have sown and the yield of the vineyard itself.

10 You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together.

11 You shall not wear clothes made of wool and linen woven together.

NWT: Deuteronomy 22:9 You must not sow your vineyard with two sorts of seed, for fear that the full produce of the seed that you might sow and the product of the vineyard may be forfeited to the sanctuary.

10 You must not plow with a bull and an ass together.

11 You must not wear mixed stuff of wool and linen together

AV-KJB: Deuteronomy 22:9 Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest the fruit of thy seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled.

10 Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together.

11 Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together.

RSV: 1 Kings 20:38 Then the prophet departed, and waited for the king along the road, disguising himself with a bandage over his eyes.

NWT: 1 Kings 20:38 Then the prophet went and stood still for the king by the road, and he kept himself disguised with a bandage over his eyes.

AV-KJB: 1Kings 20:38 So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.

RSV: Job 6:6 Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt, or is there any flavor in the juice of mallows?

NWT: Job 6:6 Will tasteless things be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the slimy juice of marshmallow?

AV-KJB: Job 6:6 Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

RSV: Psalm 71:7 I have been like a portant to many, but you are my strong refuge.

NWT: Psalm 71:7 I have become just like a miracle to many people; But you are my strong refuge.

AV-KJB: Psalm 71:7 I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.

RSV: Isaiah 7:15 He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good.

NWT: : Isaiah 7:15 Butter and honey he will eat by the time that he knows how to reject the bad and choose the good.

AV-KJB: Isaiah 7:15 Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

RSV: Isaiah 51:6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and those who live on it will die like gnats; but my salvation will be forever, and my deliverance will be never ended.

NWT: Isaiah 51:6 Raise your eyes to the heavens themselves, and look at the earth beneath. For the very heavens must be dispersed in fragments just like smoke, and like a garment the earth itself will wear out, and its inhabitants themselves will die like a mere gnat. But as for my salvation, it will prove to be even to time indefinite, and my own righteousness will not be shattered.

AV-KJB: Isaiah 51:6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.

RSV: Jeremiah 13:19 The towns of the Negeb are shut up with no one to open them; all Judah is taken into exile, wholly taken into exile.

NWT: Jeremiah 13:19 The cities of the south themselves have been shut up, so that there is no one opening [them].Judah in its entirety has been taken into exile. It has been taken into exile completely.

AV-KJB: Jeremiah 13:19 The cities of the south shall be shut up, and none shall open them: Judah shall be carried away captive all of it, it shall be wholly carried away captive.

RSV: Daniel 3:2 Then King Nebchadnezzar sent for the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces, to assemble and come to the dedication of the statue that King Nebchadnezzar had set up. When they were standing before the statue that Nebchadnezzar had set up,

NWT: Daniel 3:2 And Nebchadnezzar himself as king sent to assemble the satraps, the prefects and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the judges, the police magistrates and all the administrators of the jurisdictional districts to come to the inauguration of the image that Nebchadnezzar the king had set up.

AV-KJB: Daniel 3:2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

RSV: Hosea 8:1 Set the trumpet to your lips! One like a vulture is over the house of the Lord, because they have broken my covenant, and transgressed my law.

NWT: Hosea 8:1 To you’re a mouth – a horn. [One comes] like an eagle against the house of Jehovah, for the reason that they have overstepped my covenant, and against my law they have transgressed.

AV-KJB: Hosea 8:1 Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.

RSV:  Matthew 20:2 After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard.

NWT:  Matthew 20:2 When he had agreed with the workers for a denarius a day, he sent them forth into his vineyard.

AV-KJB: Matthew 20:2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

There’s a whole lot more, but why go on and on and on? Just one more:

RSV: Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.

NWT: Isaiah 7:14 Therefore Jehovah himself will give you men a sign: Look! The maiden herself will actually become pregnant, and she is giving birth to a son, and she will certainly call his name Immanuel.

AV-KJB: Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Try to cross reference their Isaiah 7:14 with Matthew 1:22-23!

RSV: Matthew 1:22 All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

23 “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” (What happened to the young woman?)

NWT: Matthew 1:22 All this actually came about for that to be fulfilled which was spoken by Jehovah through his prophet, saying:

23 Look! The virgin will become pregnant and will give birth to a son, and they will call his name Immanuel, which means when translated, With us is God.  (What happened to the maiden?)

AV-KJB: Matthew 1:22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

THAT is enough reason to reject the RSV and the NWT. But not all of the ‘new’ bibles will go that far. However, as we will soon see, these ‘new’ and ‘improved’ bibles still go ‘far enough’ to reject them also. After all, they come from the same manuscripts (and the same manuscriptFamilies”) as the RSV and NWT! They just don’t have the courage to make as many changes!

Most people are not aware that the practice of corrupting God’s word and handling God’s word deceitfully was going on even in the Apostle Paul’s day.

2 Corinthians 4:1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;

2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

2 Corinthians 2:17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

Do you really believe that from the time the Lord Jesus Christ established His church up until the present day, that the situation has been any different at any particular time in church history? Can you honestly say that after the deaths of the apostles, men just suddenly ceased from messing with God’s words? Do you think that Satan has lost interest in corrupting God’s word?

The following are a few examples of word changes in the Old Testament (words that are underlined have been changed or removed). Please compare these verses from the AV-KJB with whatever bible you may be using:

Mark 16:9  Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

13 And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

14  Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
