BIBLICAL MARRIAGE - “YOKED” or “JOINED” TOGETHER?

In order to determine the truth from the Scriptures it is necessary to study the Bible and rightly divide God’s words.

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Please read the verses and study them according to the “principles” for Bible study laid down in Isaiah 28:10 & 13.

Isaiah 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

Isaiah 28:13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

The following list of Scriptures includes ALL of the verses (58 verses in all) in the Holy Bible with the words “Yoke”, “Yokes”, “Yoked”, and “Yokefellow”. I have also included ALL of the verses (57 verses in all) with the words Join”, “Joined”, and “Joining” for comparison. After you have read and studied all of the verses – do the Scriptures describe a Biblical marriage as being “yoked together”; or do they describe a Biblical marriage as being "joined together"?

The overwhelming testimony of Scripture concerning the word “YOKE” (and its derivatives) clearly demonstrates (over & over again) that the meaning of the word (as used in the Bible) has to do with a burden; servitude; or work (i.e. working together). There is not one single verse in the entire Bible where the word “YOKE” (or its derivatives) is ever used in connection with Biblical marriage.

Whenever Christians (elders/pastors foremost) use the word “YOKED” in describing marriage (Christian or otherwise), they are taking the word of God out of context and are twisting and wresting the Scriptures to make them line up with their own private interpretations, instead of accepting the obvious meaning of the word as it is used in the Bible.

THE WORD “JOINING” IN THE BIBLE

{1 Verse = Joining one to another, so that they stick together, and can not be sundered}

2 Chronicles 3:12 And one wing of the other cherub was five cubits, reaching to the wall of the house: and the other wing was five cubits also, joining to the wing of the other cherub.

The meaning of the word “joined” (as used in the Bible) is best described by Job 41:17:

Job 41:17 They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.

The word “joined” (in the Bible) is NOT the “SAME” as the word “yoked”. If it were, why did the translators choose to use two different words to express the exact same thought, rather than the SAME word? The translators of the King James Bible were very careful in their choice of words; as the occasion required – they some times chose to use different English words (English is far more specific and expressive than either Hebrew or Greek) than the same word in Hebrew and Greek.

The word “joined” in the Bible indicates a VOLUNTARY “joining” together where two things (items of clothing, building blocks, nations, peoples, husband & wife) are “joined” together so that they “STICK TOGETHER” and “CANNOT BE SUNDERED”!.

The word “yoked” clearly indicates “SERVITUDE” (sometimes voluntary, but more often INVOLUNTARY) - where two animals are temporarily “yoked” together to accomplish a task, and when that task is completed, they are then “unyoked”, that is they are SUNDERED APART! {This may be a good description of modern “marriage” in America, but it is NOT a good description of a “BIBLICAL MARRIAGE”!}

Having read and studied all of the Bible verses concerning “yoked” and “joined”  – Can anyone honestly say (according to the Scriptures) that a Biblical “marriage” is the SAME as being “yoked together”?

After having read and studied all of the verses – can you see WHY I say that being “YOKED TOGETHER” has absolutely NOTHING TO DO with a BIBLICAL MARRIAGE?

Being “yoked together” may describe Muslim marriages, or Hindu marriages, or Buddhist marriages, or even Secular Humanist marriages, but being “YOKED TOGETHER” has absolutely NOTHING TO DO with a BIBLICAL MARRIAGE!

I think most Christians can “discern” for themselves the truth of the Scripture (just from the “words”) - without the “aid” of a Dictionary; or a college education or the ability to be able to conjugate verbs, or tell the difference between nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, or prepositions! Can you imagine the Lord Jesus Christ, or the Apostles Peter, James, John, or Paul using “grammatical rules” to teach God’s Holy word?

My wife and I are NOT “YOKED TOGETHER” in marriage. We are NOT A “TEAM”, NOR are we “PARTNERS” in this life. God has JOINED us together in ONE BODY (One Flesh), of which I am the HEAD. She is NOT my SERVANT, NOR is she my MASTER. She is my “HELPMEET” [Genesis 2:18-20] and life’s “COMPANION” [Malachi 2:14]; and there is no one on this earth who means as much to me as she does! NOT my parents; NOT our children; NOT our grandchildren; NOT our great-grandchildren; and NOT my dear and close friends. Only Almighty God is more precious to me than my wife.

The very idea that a genuine Biblical marriage is “like” being “yoked together”, goes against every Scriptural precept and principle presented in the Bible! When two oxen are “yoked together” to do work, they must be “EQUALLY YOKED” – that is they must be “EQUALS”. How can I be the head of the body if my wife and I are “EQUALS”? How can the Lord Jesus Christ be the HEAD of HIS BODY – IF we are “EQUAL” with Him? It doesn’t “work” and that is WHY so many “Christian” marriages fail in the Western world today!

I wouldn’t care if all the Dictionaries in the world said that a Christian marriage is like being “yoked together” - you couldn’t PROVE it from the Scriptures; NOT unless you are the kind of person who is adept at “twisting’, “wresting” and CHANGING the Holy words of God!

Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be
joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

{“JOINED NOTyoked” together. ONE FLESH NOT two separate, but equal, “workers”.}

32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Psalms 33:4 For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.
